All in all, it all depends on where you go IMO.
That should be obvious lol.

If your Asian and you try to buy a car any where close to Arcadia to San Marino, most of the well known dealerships would not blink an eye if you go in wearing shorts and a white t-shirt because they know not to judge. Younger generations from Mainland China wear no where close to how they should. Rusnak, New Century etc. You go outside of that bubble then that's a bit more iffy.

Ffs I saw some young Asian dude exit out of a Yellow Ferrari wearing cargo shorts, thin white t-shirt + sandals. That is rather normal around here.

OK, new question. What is the actual pronunciation of the name: Nguyen.

I have heard it pronounced different ways, even by the persons with those names. But they have all been "westernized" Asians that were at least second generation. So, I don't know what the native language pronunciation is. Enlighten me, please.

It's pronounced "wen"... I used to say it all sorts of wrong.

Interesting... have also heard "New-yen" and "Gooey-yen". Both from whites and people of Asian decent. But "wen" is, basically, official eh? Thanks.

This is a great question. I believe the "wen" version is a westernized version. Perhaps someone of Vietnamese descent who is a bit older and wiser can help out, but I think the true pronunciation is ngwen. But this is too difficult for you whities to say.
Just pretend you are saying a verb ending in -ing, hold on to that last sound and then add -wen.

Yup, in all school and work settings, folks with this last name have used "wen", definitely not N-goo-yen or Noo-yen. However, the real pronunciation is perhaps too difficult for Western tongues.

I think this version (ngwen) is the one I was hearing, but trying to figure out how to phonetically spell. Yes, for us whities, the struggle is real.

It's really hard to spell out phonetically. "Wen" is a massive oversimplification of it and nowhere near correct. The Ng is like a word that ends in -ing. Ngwien. Tonal languages...

Edit: Didn't even see that Tara said the same thing about -ing. Well done, fellow Asian. It's more of an eee-nn than just "wen."

Biorin isn't Chinese. But yes, Ng is pronounced like the number 5 if you are speaking Cantonese or Mandarin. But anglosized, it's Ing or Eng or if you're fancy, you can try hanging on to the last sound in "tongue".
