It's like you totally ignored my OP lol.
He did.

And dude, for $2000? There are MUCH better/faster/bigger laptops out there for $2000 that will last longer than HP.

Just my $0.02 on this sub $500 U.S. adventure.

Most HP and Dell laptops are hot garbage. ALL of them sold as “consumer” grade fit that description.

Ikr? I don't need my computer to shoot freaking laser beams lol. I just bought a cool phone that was not even CAD170 but there are ppl who will spend over a grand, I wonder how much better are they? I definitely go for value esp when dealing w electronics.

Depends on what you're using them for, and price is another issue entirely. I prefer Lenovo, despite Chinese manufacturing.

Yeah sorry, just checked your price range, grab a refurbed laptop , many companies such as the one I work for has a two year lease agreements. Laptop are returned and replaced with next gen. These end up back on the market at greatly reduced prices. Basically your looking for something with tpm2 chip and that will run windows 11 ( it’s a combo of processor model , tmp2 chip for security credential handling , and minimum disk size) Windows 10 has a limited support life left.

But looking at some of the advice you’ve been getting. I wouldn’t bother with anything other than an ssd upgrade. But running older operating system with its lack of security is asking for your credentials to be stolen. If that’s not important to what you use it for , eg , no online shopping our using any accounts that are linked to your medical or financial details then upgrade existing.

Couple of the comments on the hp version I’ve suggested make me smile. Perhaps people should work out who the oem is before posting generic comments on its quality and performance. But sorry for skim reading and missing pricepoint of OP.

This x1000!! It really is shocking what a difference an SSD and RAM replacement can make, even with older gen CPUs. I would consider this the most cost-effective/value option by far, and since OP states that they are not a power user, makes the case for this even stronger.

Tx for bumping this, I've been ambivalent about when to proceed, the computer is still working ok, but I'm sure sooner or later it's gonna crash on me for good. I guess I'm a bit apprehensive about the whole remove HDD and install SSD and hope that the Win10 installs w/o any prbs and during the process won't leave me w the equivalent of the blue screen of death lol.

Bro, again, since you are installing a new SSD, if you get BSOD, you can always uninstall your new SSD, and put back the old HDD. you are back again in no time.

You have nothing to lose on this. Don’t make a simple thing this complicated lol

Tx man, maybe simple for you but I really suck at this stuff and it makes me nervous lol. The thing is, but I do have something to lose if the Win10 somehow through whatever glitch doesn't install, I'm then holding onto a new SSD that can't be used by me.

Ok, so my computer crapped on me finally ...I guess 10 years of use is ok but it sucks.

I figure I'm just gonna find a local computer expert to install a new SSD for me, any idea how much will the total service+SSD cost ballpark? The prb is I don't want the guy to be snooping around my HD stuff, so I wonder if there's a way around it? Just stand there and watch him hand that HD to me before he does his stuff?

Maybe try a Mac? I rarely have issues and am able to keep them 6 or more years. In fact, I end up gifting them to family when I upgrade and end up running even longer.

I don't wanna learn a new sys, so I'm stuck with Win and things are just more limited w Apple. My computer lasted for 10 years, so it wasn't so bad.

Suffer what, though? My laptop died after 10 years, so I guess lasted even longer than your Macs, so not sure what you're talking about.

One thing that Apple can never seem to have is readily available and wider selection of software, it's just not the dominant platform: so I don't think I'll ever go for that.

Here comes the argument for Parallels....

It's like politics; no matter the argument or logic, you aren't going to win against a Mac lover (holds true for Tesla, too). The only way to win is not to play.

okay, i mean they are refurbed and mantained by IT departments, but to each their own.

my Lenovo puchased from ebay 10 years ago with a quad core, 16gb ram, and 256 SSD still performs beautifully. price paid. 300 bucks

This is how I run for work, but I deal with Windows issues all day. Company laptops are lucky to make it three years, some can maybe limp along for 4-5 years. Conversely, our Mac users rarely have issues. They can do all the things a Windows person can do, so the notion that Mac can't do what Windows does, is misplaced at best. However, if you like Windows you like windows. I wish you all the best in your fix and replacement computer. You must have gotten an anomaly if the computer has lasted 10 years.
