Depends on what you need. The Drive Recorder that comes included on the X1 in certain packages is missing many key features. It doesn't automatically start recording every time you drive the car, for instance. It will record impacts starting from up to 30 seconds before the accident and up to 30 seconds after, but the car has to detect the impact. Also, the front camera used for recording is located in the grill, so not necessarily the optimum position for recording what lead up to the accident. The augmented reality nav uses the camera in the windshield, and it would have been nice if BMW were to use this camera instead for the front camera recordings. You can of course manually trigger recording, in one minute clips. If you're using a USB stick you can trigger a record of your entire drive until you shut off the car, BUT it will take up your infotainment screen the entire time you're recording. If you're fine with these shortcomings, then you probably wouldn't need an aftermarket dash cam.

I want to install an auxiliary battery for parking monitoring with a drive recorder.
I would like to know the location of the fuse that supplies power only when the engine is running on the new X1 (U11). Power must be removed when the engine is off, otherwise charging the auxiliary battery could damage the vehicle's battery. does anyone know? |

I'm waiting for response about Car Eye 3.0 from my dealer, but it would be easier to just order the Fitcam option (US$ 189, plus 5% off on Amazon) |

I found the Fitcamx really good apart from the lack of a polarising filter being available so you can get a bit of glare. I had the BMW Car Eye 3 on my X3 and the fit cam was as good if not a bit better than that.

I'm looking for a dash camp for my car once it arrives soon and this Fitcamx looks the best option at the moment. Clean design, not hard install, no cables and etc. Eye 3.0 is too big for my taste and looks ugly.

Direct from their site, they want $50 shipping to Hawaii, vs $18 on Amazon. Hawaii always gets screwed when it comes to shipping. I guess I'll be ordering one from Amazon, was looking at some YouTube reviews of the fitcam and it's pretty impressive for the price. And the cleanest install as well.

Just ordered the FitCamX dual camera kit from Amazon a few days ago. Should be arriving by the end of the month, and I'll probably tackle the front cam first and then eventually install the rear cam whenever I feel like taking apart interior panels to run the cable lol.

Finally got around to installing the FitcamX front camera a few minutes ago, will tackle the rear camera on a day when I have more free time. Everything came packaged pretty nicely, and includes everything you need for the install including the trim removal tool and 128GB micro SD card. Install was pretty easy, took about 10 minutes start to finish. The initial panel with the speaker grille closest to the mirror, you start at the edge closest to you and pull downward. There is some force required, and I thought I heard a clip break, but all was good. Using the included trim removal tool to lever against the rear clips helped to loosen them. After that, separating the other two pieces from the mirror assembly was just simply prying them apart gently. Just remove the small plug from the mirror, insert it into the adapter and plus the adapter into the harness and tuck the wires, then reassemble. I've attached a few photos of the clips of the first panel so it's easier to see how it attaches.

As stated earlier, about 10 minutes. It’s really that easy!

Dashcam not working
Hi there, need some advice on which fuse to use for a dashcam. I have the Nextbase front and rear dashcam which was installed on our old car (Mazda CX3) without any issues what so ever, worked perfect.
Funnily enough, the YouTuber we found who shows how to install in the Mazda has the exact same cam setup instructions for the BMW X1. However, the fuse they suggest we use doesn't work when I tried to wire it up. This is the video we watched: This is our fusebox within the glove box of our 2018 X1. https://www.flickr.com/photos/198859...posted-public/ The fuse highlighted in the picture is the one we are advised to use in the video. I tested the fuse and it does indeed only power up when the ignition is on. However, once all wired up, there is no power to the dashcam when the ignition is switched on. Would anyone have any advise as to which of the other fuses we can jump off to power up the dashcam when the ignition is on? Appreciate any assistance, thanks. |
