I'm sure you'd even find some old school BMW nut to pay way to much for it cuz they don't like the direction BMW took the M division over those years.

So will the NA spec X1 actually switch over cause motor trend is saying NA X1s aren't going to get the 4 cylinder at launch.
http://wot.motortrend.com/four-1-bmw...-x1-24599.html "BMW officials tell us that this engine won’t be offered in U.S.-spec X1s, but confirm this engine is destined for the U.S. in other models. We’ve already heard the Z4 roadster is due to receive this engine sometime next year, but knowing BMW’s knack for dispersing engines across its portfolio, there’s a good chance we’ll see it in volume models like the 1- and 3 Series lines." Time table different for NA? |

Yeah, I've seen some suggestions of that, but there will be exceptions including the mini 1.6L which will be shared with BMW. Also, do the N55 and new turbo 4 even share the same stroke? I was under the impression that the N55 stroke was 89.6mm while the new 4 was 90mm, which means they can't share rods anyway. Both do have an 84mm bore, yes.

With the tuning potential of this engine I could see myself skipping the ~4k six cylinder premium to get this engine. That is of course it performs well and give superior mileage

Not necessarily. While that is a likely launch timeframe for the all new MY 2013 F30 3 series sedan, it is not clear yet what they will do with the E92/E93. For that matter, it is not clear yet when MY 2012 will start this year either. Stay tuned to bimmerpost to see how it unfolds.

Thanks mkoesel. Definitely keeping my ears open on this.
I guess either way, I'm ordering an E92 M3 sometime this year. I just don't know if it will be a 2012 or 2013 then. |

I'm wondering if there is any chance the 2012 328(x)i models will get the slightly improved I6. On the one hand, why would they do it just to use it for one year, but on the other hand, that's what BMW does all the time. They certainly didn't mind putting it on the new X3 and 528i even though both of them will receive the I4 next year. We'll see. |

I currently own a '10 GTI and yeah, it's a biotch of a situation. DI basically makes all the lovely detergents and additive package worthless since your fuel is going straight into the chamber and not being sprayed over the tops of the valves. But, that's one of the pitfalls of the design - great for fuel economy and power - lousy for preventing buildup. And your motor sounds like a diesel at idle. Wife first heard it and asked if I'd gotten a TDI instead .

Sad indeed. It will be interesting to see how the new turbo four stacks up in the real world, both in terms of performance and economy. No doubt BMW will be able to claim a nice bump in mpg in the EPA tests, but let's see what happens when this engine gets out on real streets with real people driving. If drivers are going to get the same level of performance that we are getting from our N52s, I predict that the real world mpg differences won't be that great. We will soon see.
