Well, of course everyone is biased about what they chose to buy, but of affordable modern BMWs, I'll give an honor roll call out to my current BMWs:
1) E39 M5. My daily driver for almost 12 years now, and it is amazingly still a relevant car. I'm picking up a F80 M3 on June 3 (ED) but I will keep this car. I think it is the most balanced car I will ever own. 2) Z4M coupe. The last of a breed from BMW - iconic I6 S54, MT only, minimal electronics. Another keeper. 3) Z8 - I'm not a convertible fan but I would love to have this one (would probably put the hardtop on). I'm a big fan of the S62 in the E39 M5, and this car is so beautiful...

1939 BMW 328...
Pre-war success. Post war basis for Veritas racers. And after the war, Britain stole the engine to create the Bristol straight six which was adapted by Sir Lyons for Jaguar cars until 1971.

E36 M3, had that honest old school mechanical feel.
E46 M3 had more energy and enthusiasm but the steering was ruined IMO - and going forward through the next generations it never recovered. Z4M vert, because wind in your hair. I might buy one while they are still reasonable. But ultimately I don't regret that the journey has brought me to the F80.

1) There is only one BMW which won more racing titles than any other car in history of BMW.
BMW E30 M3 Racing improves the breed and if you use that as a measuring stick then choice is clear. It is the car after all other M cars were modeled after. It is the M car with highest resale value. It is easily and by far the best BMW ever made. It is a winner and champion. 2) It has been said that the most balanced and practical BMW of all time in terms of price/utility/performance/weigh distribution/gas mileage is BMW E39 530i. It is the quintessential BMW that will not break the bank. It is very good at literally everything, but excellent at nothing. Being average at everything at a lot of things is evolutionary the most advantageous. 3) Most famous BMW engine. This is easy choice and while V10 is glorious everybody who knows BMWs will realize S38 I-6 in E34 M5 is essence of what BMW is. Hand built. 4) Above is my opinion based without taking bias into consideration. Being that I am on my 5th E39 M5 you can probably guess my choice for best BMW. |

I vote the E36 M3 as the best! It's Fast,...relatively lightweight,...and goes around corners like crazy!
Plus,...it was my first M car!

1)e30 M3
2)e46 csl 3)e39 4)z8 - may have underperformed, but IMO, the prettiest car BMW has ever made.

When did "automatic" implies that it's a slushbox? To me, and most people, an "automatic" is anything that can shift itself. So, yes, a slushbox, SMG, DTC, PDK, etc...(whatever the technology behind it) anything without a 3rd pedal IS an "automatic"!
