To be honest, I don't think that keeping adding turbos is the way to the future.
I think Audi's new engine with turbos and an electrical supercharger is a way better solution, will full torque from 1000 RPM: http://www.autoblog.com/2016/03/03/a...-tdi-official/ |

According to other sites, the same ZF 8HP is being used on all 7-series models, including this one, and BMW had to cap the torque output because that was the max it could handle. Other versions of the transmission can handle more (pretty sure the Chrysler Hellcat models and Audi SQ7 use the ZF HP90 8-speed). Not sure if there was a packaging constraint or BMW just felt the costs associated with sourcing a different transmission for a low volume model weren't worth it. Either way I think it's a shame -- without being constrained the engine might have matched or eclipsed the SQ7's diesel V8 with twin turbos and electric supercharger. That would have been an impressive headline, and it's an opportunity lost to one up a big rival who has certainly not shied away from one upping them the last few years.

True enough. However, for the types of vehicles BMW manufactures, i.e. those meant for personal transportation - passenger cars and light trucks - the claim is correct. Agree though, that this could have been made more clear in the press material, sure.

I am not an engineer but the HP90 can handle over 700lb-ft, so if BMW is already using it on other 7's then I don't know why they hamstrung the new flagship diesel engine with a lower version that can't. Maybe SCOTT26 knows the real story.

Although it is for now. They have developed a Power eDrive Diesel which would arrive for implementation in vehicles like the X7 and 9er. And more likely in the mid-life cycle of the 7er and the all new X5.

The SQ7 uses the 8HP95X and there is no mention of which specific transmission is fitted to the 750d/Ld. As Scott said, this won't be the top of the range diesel. |

Stick this engine into a 3 series, with M suspension and make it also have FWD electric motors for assistance. That would be an awesome car. Nothing like great handling and 40MPG combined, with 450+ HP and AWD.
I'd also straight pipe it, none of this DPF/SCR BS America requires on diesels.

Impressive. Now waiting for first engine with more turbo's than cylinders.

Does anyone really believe the statement is meant for anything other than passenger cars? I doubt commercial vehicles and marine vessels are being compared or cross-shopped with this car.

I wondered why BMW hadn't used a diesel with Power eDrive, so I'm looking forward to it. Now, I just hope it's sold in the U.S. in the X5.

Putting an electric drive motor in the driveline or at the wheels would provide instant torque to the wheels from 0rpm/0mph. An electric supercharger still has to build up boost (no matter how quickly it does it, it's not instant), and the engine has to utilize that boost to make power before it's sent to the wheels. In terms of complexity though, hybrid is probably more difficult to tune and get working smoothly and seamlessly. The electric supercharger you just need to regulate the total boost pressure of the entire system.

I think the BMWs claim that this is the highest HP mass production diesel 6 cyl is accurate. People seem to immediately compare to 8 cyl (or building sized marine engines) which I guess is the ultimate flattery for the BMW engineers behind this motor!
