I roast my own. Buy the green beans from a few places, mostly Sweet Maria's. It's really interesting tasting the differences between both the region it was grown and how it was roasted. There's alot of variability you can control just by the roast. Plus - you're not drinking something that was roasted (or worse - ground) months ago....

+1 for Peet's Major Dickasons Blend. It's the best coffee out there. No offense, but I'm convinced Starbucks sucks. I drank Starbucks for several years long ago but have not drank it in the past few years. Just cannot go back. They even opened a Starbucks IN my apartment building (yes, in the building) and I never go there. Their coffee is no good.

I make an entire french press full of Peets coffee, dump it into a coffee mug, close it, then throw the entire mug into the fridge for at least 12 hours. It makes enough that I do this every 3 nights.

Every morning I make my iced coffee, put a bit of sugar, cream, and vanilla extract and I feel like I'm in heaven. It's taken years to perfect my method and I love it, lol

edit: I only buy whole bean, never ground. I finely ground the beans immediately before brewing.

FYI. At Hamptons or any hotel chain where there is a Regular and Dark/Robust coffee, the ground coffee is the same, just different ratios.

So - coffee wise, I typically go with Dunkin' and personally think Starbucks tastes like shit.

Now that said, my project engineer recently took a trip to the Dominican Republic and brought me back some of this Cafe Santo Domingo. Lemme just say, it's damn good. If you're a fan of Dunkin', you'd like this.

I also have some Brazilian coffee that we picked up in Sao Paulo (armpit of the world). It needs run through the espresso machine...but has some damn good flavor. I'd snap a pick of that for yinz...but it's just a gold brick.

Another vote for Groundworks, $16 per pound, organic, and as good if not better than Illy or Intelligencia.

So I used to be an assistant manager at Starbucks. I started complaining back in 2005 that their coffee taste too bitter. I personally like Peet's coffee.
My Wife's aunt has a Cuisinart grinder/coffee maker. She is a major Peet's coffee lover. She always buys whole beans, grind them up, and brew them up at the same time. Love the taste.

For great coffee I would stay away from large brands or national coffees such as SBUX, Dunkin, 8'o Clock, and even Illy. Many of these coffees are over-roasted, overpriced, and are not high quality (especially for espresso making). The taste you are tasting is not actual coffee, it is a concoction of strange flavors and burnt-ness.

The best way to get great coffee is to go to a local, independent coffee shop that roasts their own coffee. Always pick up the most fresh bag (depending on the date) of whole beans, preferably ones that say in-season. For espresso drinks choose dark roasts... for pour over, solo, chemex, french press use what ever flavor you like... don't make coffee with a regular coffee machine. Use a burr grinder (not a slicer) to grind the coffee.

Coffee is like making wine or beer, you have to start with good raw ingredients but every step can make or break the taste. Most people are accustomed to poorly made coffee from SBUX, gas stations, work's break room which is a shame seeing that there are so many kinds of coffee to try. Have a conversation with your local cafe's barista and ask questions if you don't really know.

Sorry if this all sounds pretentious. Really just try to help since I was a bit spoiled with good coffee for 6 years living in Chicago. The big roaster there is obviously Intelligentsia as direwolfM3 mentioned. A hidden gem in Chicago (if you ever go there) is Asado on Irving park... They bought a Kees van der Westen espresso machine and make better drinks overall than Intelligentsia.. although they lack the vibe.

I moved to DFW 2 months ago and getting into coffee down here. My Colombian neighbor gave me a bag he got while he was back visiting, picked up a bag from Weekend Cafe (although they get theirs from Seattle), and looking forward to trying Addison Coffee Roasters.

Coffee

Looking for very good coffee brands. Medium roast, unground bean, 100% arabica only, single source, for French press, as consistent as can be, mail order fine as long as it’s freshly roasted as can be, not off the charts expensive for daily drinking. Let’s hear your choices?

I drink Counter Culture Coffee. I enjoy picking a few different single origin farms each time I order and comparing the flavor. I split between french press and espresso. I've never had a bad bag from them and I really struggle when I run out and have to drink anything store bought.
