Because it would be a huge waste. Not needing things like a driveline, transmission, fuel tank, exhaust system etc. requires less space. This will change the look of an efficiently designed EV car vs a "normal car" and when done with an intent and competence to create a beautiful design it changes in a very good way.

I think what he's getting at, and I agree, is that they might sell more of these alternative power trains if they didn't look like spaceships. People might support the different tech, but not the different look.

I like the look except the front grills. Tone those down to current gen i3 size and I think we have a winner.

Wow, great looking concept, it makes the F90 looks like yesterdays news.
This should be the inext, looks like a nice start from the HW pov. Now, let´s have a innovative interior as well BMW. I guess we all are more or less impressed with this concept, the renders that was leaked was horrible, this is a great start towards the future, as the EV is.

Tesla proved that you don't need to look like a spaceship or a boiled frog to sell. Part of the i3 I love is the concept behind it and what they did a a whole and materials used. As a designer myself I get what they where trying to do and love it for what it is but it's not your typical BMW both in styling and proportion and the average BMW owner hates it for its looks. Probably because it doesn't jive with their brand philosophy. Funny thing I noticed is outside the typical BMW customer others find it very cool and strike up conversations all the time wanting to know more about it. So maybe they knew what they where doing..... This new direction is taking customer feedback and applying it in a very nice future thinking design. Sometimes having a polarizing design can be good and bad but even if bad it gets you noticed and talked about. |

And you're right that BMW is trying to expand their respective base - it's obvious in the last several years. The car was once known for RWD and driving dynamics, and you're hard pressed to find those across the spectrum these days. I really do like the shape - just not all the trinket-styling if that makes sense. I wonder how cool it would look if the shape were preserved, but more typical or traditional car design cues were utilized. Almost has that 6er GC feel to the shape...

What's with BMW and concept cars, all promise no delivery (this car will be in production after 2021??? Maybe??? Tesla, Mercedes and everyone else will be on their next gen by then). I'm sticking with my M4. Bring on the new AWD system and get me close to 3.0secs flat in the next generation and life will be good.

I think it looks great, including the rear. The kidney grills, however, are hideous. Honestly, the i3 and i8 grills look better. I think this is in the right direction for electric vehicles. We've been teased with production cars not looking as futuristic as their concepts for decades now. With the i3 and i8, like it or not, they have been pretty close to the futuristic spirit of the concepts (I'm glad they dropped the glass panels, for privacy and practicality'a sake).
I used to say that why don't they make electric cars look like regular cars. They do look like regular cars... of the future.

Well better than the Tesla IMO. Once u take off the bits that won't see production - the weird trapezoidal b-pillar and the funky grille - this thing will kill. And I will buy it.

We are at a point in time where the normal car (ICE ) are becoming more expensive to produce than a standard Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV). Rapid battery prices dropping will eventually lead to a disruption for the entire car industry.

Looks decent except for the dumb looking kidney grill outline thing. Hope they don't artificially "cripple" the design aesthetics in order to create distance between whatever the entry level version of this will be vs the larger "premium" versions. Wouldn't count on it for a while though, until they need to sell electrics.
