If gasoline costs almost 10$/gallon a lot of people are going to have a lot bigger problems than not being able to have a BMW or fly on a plane.
Half the country will not be able to afford to heat their homes in the winter. |

$9.54/gallon in the Netherlands, with an unemployment rate of 4.1% and GDP of $38,600.
I imagine we'd survive, too. I'd buy something like a Carrera GT or GL65 AMG if they were going for a song.

world wont run out of oil at least for a long long while
hydrogen still is chiefly produced with oil. same for methane. talk around the office is that brasil just discovered oil off their coasts - about 33 billion barrels worth. the biggest oil discovery in a while. |

Historically, gas prices have gone up the week before Memorial Day in May and don't typically start to drop until after Labor Day in September. What torques me the most, though, is seeing the price at, say, $3.539 in the morning and three hours later it's up 10˘ a gallon without the station even receiving a delivery.

I disagree: gasoline engines have a good ways to go before being "peaked out" in terms of efficiency.

I'd definitely get one, if I could afford it.

I think what a lot of people here do not understand is that if gas hits $10.00 a gallon anytime soon half of us on this forum will be out of a job anyway. Our Economy will totally collapse with that kind of pressure. It will not survive such a price increase. I believe the economy would make a larger downturn before gas went to $10.00 a gallon which in itself would result in a reduction in demand thus a reduction in price of gasoline. The oil producing countries can ill afford for the American economy to take a total nosedive because we are still their largest customer. I live in a very rural area where many people have to drive a considerable distance to work and shop. I have already seen a substantial drop in traffic on the roads from the gas prices. How do you think this is affecting retailers? The upward surge of gas prices cant continue to $10.00 without total devastation of our economy. I dont believe it will hit that price in the near future. I could be wrong though and our butts are toast.

Just as a point of reference, most of Europe is currently sitting around $8 or so a gallon equivalent.

You'd still have the dissasembly problem though; heck, it might be worse with the breeder reactors.

Last year I paid $2800 for fuel @ about 5 bucks a gallon. So if it doubles up in cost, I'll have spent $5600 for fuel.
To me, that is really not the end of the world. That works out to $233 more per month. I think that if things are that tight, maybe one shouldn't own an expensive car? |
