Owning an orangutan would be like owning a SLAVE.

They're highly intelligent.

Maybe you could buy her a human child instead, on the black market. Maybe one stolen from his parents, from Africa? What would she think of that?

Orangutans are too smart to be kept in a cage.

Fortunately, species like orangutans are very few and far between outside of zoological facilities. Unfortunately, both they and chimps do make their way into private collections from time to time. I used to subscribe to an exotic animal newsletter because of the critters I raise (snakes, emus, etc. hence the screen name), and the last chimp I saw was going for $70k. So with that in mind, tell her to get a damn M3 instead of the orang. At least it won't go out of its way to try to kill her if she neglects it.

To GreenThree, does this really look like it would bite or scratch anyone's face off?

She's a bobcat I raised from the time she was 5 weeks old.

I was thinking the same thing, has she thought about the cost of this thing at all? Drop a 100 grand + on a orangutan? WOW! She may have gone a little Coo Coo from the Coa Coa puffs! Maybe she has lost touch with reality...

Hate to be Mr. Smarty pants but an orangutan is an ape and not a monkey.

Yep - she is clinically interesting - I wonder what Freud would say. Best of luck!

it will happen soon enough i can guarantee it (maybe not your face "off" but you get the picture). my neighbor works at a big cat sanctuary and she tells us almost daily of new people trying to dump bobcats and such (mostly bobcats) there because they become out of control when outgrowing their kitten stage

Looks harmless in the picture. You never know though. Those are some pretty big paws. Where do you keep it, (what does it do for exercise?) and what does it eat?

my wife wanted some type of flying squirrel or something, called a sugar glider. I like animals, but you have to put the smack down somewhere. A small monkey is going to be like having a child, you won't be able to leave them. Make her understand how much work goes into it and she'll probably change her mind, not to mention the expenses.

...or the fact that it is just wrong. IMO wild animals should never be put in the confines of an urban environment.

she might be a little off her rocker but maybe really probe into why she wants it and do the research and make her realize it is not a pet that can be left alone all day! they act like human and need constant attention!!

Super cute, I've always wanted a bobcat, hear they can be hard to control. How old now? Any newer pictures, would love to see more! Did you find it or get it from a controlled source? Some hate but I think if you care for the animal it can be fine, but you just have to realize they may always have an element of wild in them.

Yeah, one angry adult orangutans could tear you and your house apart fairly efficiently. They are milder than Chimpanzies but still are capable of riping ears off and such...

They can be deadly...

I bought her from a well known private breeder here in Arkansas (lady named Lynn Culver, who runs NOAH - Natural Order Animal Husbandry) about 8 years ago. I was a senior in high school at the time and was getting ready to go to a local university. Stupid move. I raised her inside for a while, then built an outdoor enclosure for her. After a few years of having her, I realized I just wasn't able to give her the kind of time and attention she required, so I gave her to a man who lives in NE TX, around the New Boston area. Last time I received an update from him, he sent a picture of him laying on his couch with her sleeping on his chest.

Now don't let me try to fool anyone into thinking keeping these kinds of animals is a breeze. She was a major undertaking, and bobcats are probably one of the 'easiest' wild cats to raise. She was insanely protective of her toys and food. I remember coming home with a new toy from the store, and she'd be so interested in it, but as soon as I gave it to her she'd start growling and skulk off with it in her mouth like I was going to take it from her. She and I did have out spats from time to time, and I did receive a couple nice [small, manageable] wounds, but I do know a guy in central AR who had his finger completely filleted from a Canadian lynx he was hand feeding. Bobcats and other wild cats are also very well known for spraying. Whether it was because I had Isis spayed or just her personality, she never sprayed, thank goodness. When they do that, a house tends to start smelling like a zoo in a hurry.

Anyway, it was an enormous learning experience that I'll always remember, though that I doubt I'll ever undertake again. I work with and keep plenty of other critters to fill that need.

Here are the two most recent pictures I have of her, both dated mid '04. This was just before I rehomed her.

Now, here's where my real passion lies. Warning: snakes ahead.

(While I was a teacher, talking to some of my students about a Louisiana pinesnake, the US's most endangered large snake species.)

And a random cobra

Its just completely unrealistic to even consider getting an animal of that size. Unless you have a tremendous estate and can replicate a jungle/their natural surroundings in your backyard, it really doesnt make sense.

Id love to get a snow leopard or tiger, someday if I can afford to do that ^, I will.
