When I was a freshman in college, there was a middle-aged veteran in a few of my classes who just retired from the Navy. His last assignment was in the press office on the USS Nimitz, while they were shooting that movie. He said that the captain and some of the senior officers had "bit" parts as silent enlisted crew extras during some of the shoots.

The most interesting thing about the movie is that the Nimitz was based in the Atlantic out of Norfolk at the time. For the Pearl Harbor scenes, the movie producers sent a production unit to Hawaii with instructions to paint the Nimitz's "68" onto another carrier to shoot the pier and in-port scenes. The captain of that carrier (non-nuclear USS Ranger CV-61?) allegedly pitched a fit, and the film either avoided showing the carrier's tower or lived with the continuity error hoping nobody would notice.

Although the movie was not really popular with the critics, I really liked the historic story line...and grew to like it even more after hearing the behind-the-scenes stuff from the veteran who worked with the film crews on the ship.....
