The above is a discussion of if things remain static. You also have to consider how the bridge will hold up if/when another mud slide happens. |

That sucks. We were just there this past summer. Drove from Orange County to Oregon almost exclusively up the 1. It's such a beautiful drive up in Big Sur!

If you put this road on stable ground, I think it would be about 50 miles inland. The entire coastline is shifting, as it has done for centuries. They 'fix' this stuff continually - just look at that photo above, and note the area a quarter mile up from the bridge, where they did the previous repair of a slide. Hwy 1 is truly a national treasure, and getting to drive it was one of my high points, but in some ways it is like a big living meme about mankind's arrogant (and futile) attempt to corral nature.

So I've driven Hwy 1 just once. September 1988. We took Hwy 1 down from San Fran to San Simeon (Hearst Castle) in a rented Benz 450 rag top. A few miles north of Hearst, Hwy 1 gets close to the beach, and on the left side of the road (heading south) is a cow pasture that is about 3 feet above the road surface; I'm pretty sure the location was around "Friends of the Elephant Seals". Just as we were reaching that point, out back comes a '87 E28 M5 and a '88 Lincoln LSC racing each other; both cars new, being the M5 released in 1987 and the LSC released a year later in 1988. A serious duel, as they were driving well above the speed limit and passing south-bound cars, including me, on the double yellow. So they blast by me and just about 500 hundred feet farther up, the road bends right. At that curve the wind blows sand from the beach up onto the road. The M5 was in the lead and the LSC was trailing. The M5 driver slices through the sand without any change in speed. The LSC driver panics and hits the brakes hard, right on the sand. Bad move. The rear slides left, he attempts a save and makes an over-correction... the tail then goes right. Now with the sand out of his treads and speed dropped off it bit (bit still around 40 MPH), the car hooks back up to the asphalt, but the LSC nose was now pointing towards the cow pasture... BAM! The Lincoln hits the 3-foot embankment and shoots skyward through the cow fencing into the field. It puts a divot in the embankment, shooting earth like an explosion and puts a hole in the fencing. The LSC lands on its feet and the driver now on grass, gets the car stopped before a grove of trees would have done it for him. He does a complete doughnut and a half and heads back to the hole and divot he made going in. (I pulled over once he hit the field to see the action). He slams the Lincoln nose-first back down on Hwy 1 and jets off back in pursuit of the M5. I was LMAO big time. We turned around back to the point of entry by the LSC, with my wife saying "WFT". Sure enough, the LSC left its two rectangle-shaped EV Marshal fog lights laying in the cow pasture just a few feet from the hole in the fence (the lights bolt into the bottom of the '88 LSC front bumper). Those EV Marshal fogs are meant for off road trucks and are over built, the earth had removed them from the LSC with the wire ends left bare copper as they pulled from the connectors. I picked them up and took them home back to Maryland. I had recently bought a bull-guard for my then-owned '87 Ford Ranger STX. The bull-guard had tabs for mounting aux lights, so I mounted them up and was good to go; my STX now looked like the cover pic of it on the 1987 Ford Ranger brochure! LOL. Thought I'd share...

Surprised no one has noticed this guy who just about lost his driveway. How much you want to bet that groceries and gas are a mile away to the left in the photo and 40 miles away to the right.

I no longer have any faith that we can build any infrastructure done on time or on budget... I mean I don’t think we could do anything in general within scope up here. Too many ideas, not enough money. And believe me I don’t want to pay a cent more in taxes than I already do (I.e increasing tolls or slapping another $2 gas tax on and then finding out that money hasn’t don’t jack except fill the deficit hole). Okay rant over haha
