Well in places like Japan, cell phones already do all that. So whats new? Its just a rfid card and small chip needed, they can store a lot of data in very small chips after all. I am not crazy about any of it.

if it is similar to what they already have in Germany at some grocery stores and universities, you need to register at the store before you can use the device and you still need a second form of authorization that being either a PIN or fingerprint scan. The picture only tells half the story |

BMW is not the company to establish a standard in this area. They should take the R&D money and focus on overall quality and reliabiity.

Also BMW has enough resources to do what ever the fuck they want. Developing this keyfob isn't that expensive. They are not taking away money from development of your precious BMW cars. They are partnering with credit card companies so BMw is not doing everything. |

OMG, why people are so freaked out about giving such a key to a dealer? Reality check - deal ALREADY HAS your credit card number, as you probably paid them at some point, and they have much more sensitive info if you arranged financing through the dealer.
Tell me you never gave a credit card to a waiter, who may as well be a teenage punk, or gave your CC number over the phone when booking a hotel or something like that. This thing is even safer that a plastic credit card as the number is not readable without special equipment. Also this can be made perfectly safe with just a pin number - then your vallet, your wife or your dealer would not be able to commit a fellony and use it without your premission... As for creative ways of destroying the fob when you sell the car - based on the knowledge I have about how similar things work in phones, the fob has no info about you or your credit cards. It just has a unique number, which is then connected to your payment profile in the central database. When the fob changes the owner, the tie between the number and profile is severed and the number in the fob has no meaning or connection to the previous owner whatsoever and even being able to fully decrypt and break the fob will not give the new owner access to your data. It's the same if someone gets a new credit card with a number that you once had - this does not automatically give that person access to your new credit card or any info about you. |

Before they integrate my credit cards, car key, bus pass, cell phone, library card, laser jammer and pacemaker could they figure out a cool simple way for me to have a key that works for both my car and house?
I'd be happy with just that. |

So when you loose your keys you loose both your car & your house at the same time!

i just wonder how much BMW will charge for this, and how much they are going to get from the payments you make using it. It won't be free.
