Maybe I was miseducated as a youth, but I was always told that praying mantis are an endangered species and it was illegal to kill them? Just checked snopes, and sure enough I was lied to! They *are* considered harmless insects which eat other annoying insect pests, so it's probably best to relocate them and let them do their thing.....

I read somewhere that a Praying Mantis can kill hummingbirds. I spotted one near our hummingbird feeders one day, so I dispatched it.

Looks like I've been wrong about the little green aliens.

According to most legends, the praying mantis is considered a good luck charm.

Some people even keep them as pets. Read about it here.

After reading and learning more about them I will forever think of them differently.

PS - will never keep one as a pet, though. lol

Hey, it's in their nature. I try not to focus on that singularly bad aspect

I've read a little about the good luck thing, so basically you've been getting lots as they came into your home, just that you kept rejecting it (by killing them). I wonder if you'll be especially lucky these coming days/weeks due to your deciding to shift your treatment of our little green friends? Would be interesting to know.

32oz porterhouse steak cooked medium rare. Killed it.

Felt amazing up until the part where I spent the rest of the evening in the bathroom and vowed never to eat food again.

I've always had good luck but could always use some more. Who couldn't?

German cockroaches are what most people think of.

I've hit a few possums and birds with cars, along with some fish when I was younger. I hate the feeling, and avoid killing anything I can these days.

If you read my post above (post #51) you'll see I've decided to treat them differently after reading about them, so no worries.

PS - also made an agreement with the OP here.

Here's one that state agricultural departments wants you to kill.

Quote:
Your victim: the spotted lanternfly, or Lycorma delicatula, a beautiful creature with large brownish gray wings with black spots that open to reveal striking red underwings.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it: “Kill it! Squash it, smash it … just get rid of it,” pleads the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture

Spotted lanternflies are on the most wanted list: Get ready to stomp

Trees. Hundreds of them. A few of the city projects I helped on we slaughtered blocks worth because the boulevards where being torn up for water/sewer. A good many of those trees where 50+ years old if not more.
The cities plant new after. But the same thing will happen.
And none of the wood went for anything productive. If it was 18" circumference or under we chipped it and it became basically garbage.

If you ever want wood or wood chips, call you local tree service and ask them. Odds are you can get more than you'd ever want for virtually nothing.
