Alpine300ZHP's comment about young lawyers also prompts me to think -- does your daughter have to be a little careful about driving something a bit too ostentatious for a young lawyer? I suspect that appearances can matter in a law firm. To take an extreme example, even if her family has the resources, she likely wouldn't want to show up for work in a new Ferrari convertible. Or am I too old school here? Perhaps anything she can get for 50K is safe on that front.
And I'm interested in what MK thinks so far... update?

Lots of excellent suggestions so far: brand new 330i or GV70 or IS350. All of them available no doubt in black.
Unfortunately, I already sold my excellent Turbodiesel earlier this year. Easiest vehicle to pick out in a parking lot that I've ever owned. Outstanding room -- perfect for when the office wants to go to lunch and needs to decide who's going to drive. Unfortunately, impossible to drive into a parking garage and through a drive-thru. Plus, it was not black and was 18 years old. Trade-off, trade-offs...

I'd do this. Take her to test drive a few cars that make sense and let her decide. CPO always a good shout.

I am all for giving your children and family a leg up where possible, but I also think it's important that they understand the value of money, have strong work ethic, that there is no such thing as a "free lunch", understand that you have to wait and earn the nice stuff, etc. We all know people that have had a pretty damn easy life and have no respect of others and/or what they have. I'll also caveat this that I know absolutely nothing about the OP's daughter other than what he's posted and his daughter could very well have all of the positive traits I noted and expects absolutely nothing from him.

And this may be why he feeling so giving at the moment. Serious medical emergencies, near death experiences, etc. often led people to make rash, weird, out of character, etc. decisions shortly after the event. It's pretty common. Most docs would tell you to rest, reflect, and not make big decisions during this time.

I bought my daughter a '66 Mustang when she was 17 as her first car.
She's 40 now and a great kid and a very responsible person. Works hard for everything she has. I love her dearly and we are best friends. Fathers and daughters. |

My kids have six years to go until it's time for them to get cars. One will get my wife's 2016 E300, the other will get a comparable used car.

Let me give you some more background. All of the financial suggestions you mentioned have been handled. Everything and a few more you neglected to mention. Let mew tell you about my daughter and her character. Some may sound trite but it means a lot to me. She has only kinda put her foot wrong once in life now that I think about it. Under age drinking on Bourbon street and the DA piled on every additional charge he could think of until she nearly threw up. She had to pay a fine and it was expunged when she made 21. When she was a debutante, which is a group of bratty, overindulged pit-vipers, she was voted everyone's fav. They all hate each other. When she wanted job experience in the legal field, she got a job on the governor's staff. When I asked her if she wanted me to make a few calls in advance to grease the skids, she refused all familial help and got the job on her own beating out hundreds of candidates. When she was in HS, parent after parent would come to me and tell how they loved seeing her at after hours school events because they knew someone with a level head was there. Additionally, as an 10th grader, she had to be made to leave the retirement home for her community service hours because she loved helping the elderly ladies with their nails so much. Her principal reported this to us in a meeting. Early in her schooling she struggled academically which can be a real downer in my family on one's confidence, she was depressed about her own academic prowess until the 2nd semester of her 10th grade year She made almost all straight A's thereafter, did well on college boards, graduated summa cum laude with the 2nd highest GPA in her department and is 7 months from completing law school. I rarely use the word deserve when referring to human endeavors but I will use it here. My parents would and have offered to purchase a new car for her multiple times and she demurred each time. Even today, after my follow-up appointments, I asked her about the car and she stated that she only wants the latest year diesel BMW makes, nothing more. She is a good kid that just happens to be my daughter and my best friend.
