I have an IX1 in order and have bought 20" glossy black wheels with low offset. So they will stick out some more than oem wheels.

The specs is:

Front: 8,5" ET40
Rear: 9" ET35

I have not decided if I will go for a wider rear tyre. So I bought two different dimensions for the rear, 245/40-20 and 275/35-20. I have to test on the car which will fit the best. Since this is a EV I have to think about the extra consumption the wide rears will give as well. My IX1 waiting for shipment at the port here in Norway, so hoping for delivery soon

Attachment 3084563

UPDATE:
Finally my IX1 arrived and I couldn't wait, so I test fitted my summer wheels at the workshop. It's still snow here in Norway, so I have to wait two month for driving on them.
Wheels are still within the fenders
Where did you buy the wheels

Hi all, just ordered the U11 M35i for my wife and there was no all black wheel option available. We decided to buy an all black aftermarket 20" set separatelly and BMW will mount them on before pick-up.

We like the black Borbet BY wheel, but I'm not sure it'll fit the U11 X1 M35i. The 5x112 wholes seem to be right, the width and size 8x20 also checks out, but then the ET45 and some number 72,5 differs a bit from the OEM 20" wheels (ET46 and 66,6).

Can anyone decipher this for me, is the wheel going to fit? I wanted to put the 245/40 R20 all around.

Cheers!

I bought the exact same wheels for my 2023 23d. In Germany you aren't allowed to mount the wheel if it doesn't fit perfectly. I'm going to fit them either this weekend or next weekend depending on the weather outlook.

I'll post a pic when I can so you can see exactly how they will look.

How long are you willing to wait? Earliest day I'm willing to mount them is Friday.

That would be awesome, thanks! We just ordered the car, so time is on my side.

I'm in Austria and they have similar rules for aftermarket parts...but this wheel seems so close to the OEM that I think it should fit well. The ET is 1mm less, so whatever...the only thing is the 66,6 vs 72,5 number. I saw some adapters being sold...not sure it's the way to go.

That would be the center bore diameter. My BBS wheels needed the correct size ring to be installed so that the wheels would center properly on the hub. You could get by without them if you’re really careful when tightening the lug bolts (I’ve done it in the past), but if the wheel isn’t perfectly centered when you tighten everything down you’ll feel it when you drive.

You can buy adapter rings that go inside the center hole(bore) of the rim. They likely have them on Amazon, I was able to find aluminum 73 to 66.6 rings, shouldn’t be too difficult to find

Good thread. I was able to find an M135i with summer tires and 20" wheels. I will need 19" snows in the fall.
Question what difference in handling is present with wider tires or larger offsets. Is there a performance gain in is this only cosmetic.

For summer tires, the tire tread and compound make a bigger difference, unless you're talking a massive change in tire size. Larger offsets are usually done for either cosmetic reasons or for clearance against hitting other components.

For winter tires I can't comment as I will never need them where I live.

I need new wheels. I’ve never been into car but since getting this car all I want to do it make it as unique as possible.

I really want black wheels.

I was gonna get spacers but from this thread it seems like I could just get wider wheels if I want that more aggressive look.

Can someone send some direct guidance my way?

Don’t think anyone here bought 21” yet.

Given there’s no real adaptive suspension, I think ride quality would be greatly affected with the 21” compared to the 20”.

I don't know what the ride will be for the X1 using 21-in wheels, but BMW lists the tires as 245/35R21. Since the X1's suspension, even with the M Sport non-adjustable suspension, is relatively soft, I can't imagine it being much worse than a Tesla S which has that exact same tire?

My sister-in-law has a 2017(or 2018?) Tesla Model S and it comes standard with those 245/35R21 tires on the front. The rears are wider tires. When I drove it last month, the ride was actually very good, unless there were potholes.

I wouldn’t say the suspension is soft. It’s quite compliant and rides well for a BMW without real adaptive suspension, but definitely wouldn’t call it soft.

I went from 19” to 20”. The overall ride quality was not affected all that much, but definitely noticed a difference on older uneven roads/potholes.

Personally, i wouldn’t go above 20”. Especially on 245/35. The X5/X6, for example, ride on 275/40/21 (front) and 315/35/21 (rear). On the X5 it’s actually quite good. But that’s a whole different league of suspension, significantly wider tires, and bigger sidewall ratio.

Can you run 9” wide wheels vs. using spacers? Wider tires is a better ride and more traction right?
