that seems like a dangerous thing at 4-way stop intersections where people sometimes have a hard time deciding who gets to go first.

Driving out north yesterday I was on the highway and came to a left turn with no stop, so I was rolling slowly waiting for a gap in oncoming traffic to make the turn. A gap opens up big enough for two cars to turn safely. I initiated the turn (still rolling slowly, motor on) and pressed the gas. For a good second or so, I'm sitting in oncoming traffic with ZERO acceleration, pedal unresponsive. Had it been a smaller gap in traffic this would have been terrifying. Not sure if it is due to the Auto Start/Stop, or the throttle tuning, or both, but I'm writing a letter to BMWNA because this is a potential safety issue.

I really wish at the very least it would turn off only when at a complete stop, there are tons of instances when driving when I need to slow down to less than 5mph but not stop fully, and then accelerate again.

I’ve watched the reviews of the X1 where the reviewers called it out for a delay in certain circumstances between applying the throttle and getting the response that was expected, and that’s with the engine running. I personally noticed it on a test drive of a 2023 when I found out how long it waits to kick down after you floor it as if to pass at a moderate speed.

Our older X1 has a small throttle delay from a stop or a slow roll, but putting the transmission (not the drive mode) into sport gets rid of it. So it’s something that’s been deliberately programmed into the throttle or transmission tuning, for some reason, and no car software update has ever addressed it. Kind of a bummer that they seem to be continuing that tradition in the new one.

Yeah, my 430i had it too, but in certain instances it seems worse in the X1.

I have had this in the X1 a couple of times. It is super annoying and dangerous just sitting there in traffic with no response. I also used to get it with my M135i so it is not exclusive to the X1. Happily never experienced anything even remotely like it with my M4. I think it is just a matter of the way the engine lags sometimes and interacts with the laggy DCT. Two lots of lag gives you the situation where you sit there with nothing

The brake hold is also a factor, because in my F30, when I took my foot off the brake, the car would restart. But if the brake hold is on, that doesn't happen.

I have my Auto Hold turned off. I tried it once out of curiosity, but I’m undecided if I like it or not.

Yes. On the throttle delay issues that does seem really poor. My wife noticed a bit of a hesitation on a roundabout, was when she was rolling and the engine hadn’t stopped so it wasn’t a stop start issue. I suspect it’s something to do with the DCT clutch maybe, either way it’s not a good thing.

I think a small part of it may be the DCT, but mostly software tuning. Only because in sport mode the throttle response is so much better, almost perfect.

Maybe someone can try pulling the fuse or making the car think the hood is unlocked?

Do you have their email address? I'd also like to write an email to them.

I have a 2024 x1 28i with ID9 since late December 2023. Only have 3100 miles.

I’ve mostly been using the Personal Mode & Deactivate the Auto stop/start function each time I start. I recall when I was tinkering with modes awhile ago, when in Sport Mode it Deactivated the Auto Stop/Start mode & there was no need to deactivate it as an additional step.

However while on a longer than usual trip this week I set it to Sport mode which I adjusted to:
Comfort - Drive Train
Sport - Driving Dynamics
Sport - Steering

But I quickly realized dispite the SPORT setting the engine kept stopping when approaching a stop. 🤬 I needed to DEACTIVATE as another step.

Am I going crazy or has BMW made a change recently that NOW requires drivers to ALWAYS turn off / Deactivate the function??

if so BMW is not listening to it’s customer at all.

As far as I know since early May 2024, I’m running the 3/2024.40 update, however I believe there may have been 1 or more “tweaks” made by OTA updates. Such as the SiriusXM radio Logo change & new map, Version from 2024-07-11.

I think you have to change the drive train to Sport in order to deactivate the start/stop function in sport mode.
Otherwise, you’re basically driving in “personal mode”, just with added sensitivity to the steering wheel

I agree that this is a safety. In my opinion it feels like lazy software implementation. Almost like they made it for a mild hybrid and said “ah fuck it” throw it in the ICE only version too.

There’s really no circumstance where the engine should be stopped with the car still rolling.

This will eventually cause accidents and people will get hurt.

Anyone have an idea how to submit this to the safety regulators to get a recall going?

You might be correct. Next time I’m driving I’ll try changing the SPORT Drive Train setting to Sport rather than Comfort & see it that disengages the auto Stop/Start function. But I was trying to get more Steering feeling without the DCT choppyness & heigher engine revs of Full Sport mode.

You don't have to. I use 'L' mode around touwn and 'D' everywhere else. No, I shouldn't have to do this, but that said, it's easy enough to toggle the transmission selector to change mode, plus you know which mode you are in as it displays 'D' or 'L' in the instrument display.

I have sport not low transmission.
In personal mode you can select sport when stopped and then select drive. The start stop will be deactivated.
You can also select sport and and enjoy the lowered shift points.
