I’m sorry…I just do NOT get it!
Not for the G81, not for the G99. I’m of the school of thought that if I want/need an M family car, I stick to the X’s. But…that’s just my opinion, glad that BMW apparently has a market for these Touring models.

I think wagon is ideal for someone like me. Family with 3 little kids so I need something to be able to fit and get everyone around. Yet I still want a car to have fun in. I guess I can have both an SUV and a “fun car” but that means spending extra money, having the space for all the cars, and most importantly with a family of 3 kids finding time to actually take the “fun” car out. I already tried this 2 car scenario, had a pick up and an M5, and the M5 just sat there as I never had time to take it out. Wagon is the happy middle ground.

I've been holding on my decision to go X5 or G99, but "S68 in hybrid setup (same as XM)" I'm tapping out. If I wanted a EV I would buy one. Who needs that much HP and torque on the street? Makes a interesting you tube video but doesn't belong as a daily driver. I don't want killer depreciation on a car likely to cost $150,000.00 fully optioned. I could have lived with BMW's eBoost 48V mild hybrid technology and maybe BMW will offer a model with the spec of a X5 xDrive40i or X5 xDrive M60i drive train for sane buyers.

Looks great. Is this the only wagon variant? Will there be a lower spec touring coming with the B58 or similar?

I have no need for a wagon’s increased utility, especially in a vehicle with performance intentions; plus the sedan version will be less expensive, and in my opinion the sedan is much more attractive. Better performance, less expensive, and more attractive. It’s an easy decision for me to choose the sedan.

Not crazy about that body color portion that splits up the diffuser, seems out of place, otherwise looks ok. I'd rather have the M3 touring though (and so would my wallet).

This rendering makes the car look absurdly long versus the width. Oscar Meyer.

Best reason I’ve read so far is that the G81 M3 Touring rear crash structure couldn’t pass US impact requirements and BMW wasn’t going to make the changes required. Haven’t read that from multiple sources so this may not be accurate but it does make sense.

My dealer sales manager told me dealers recommended to BMW NA to start with the M5 touring and if it sells well enough then bring in other 5er engine variants.

It’s not that I would not pay that much for a vehicle it’s more about that price point. 160-170k opens up many other options. I’m hoping it flops like the XM and I can swoop in with a discount. I won’t hold my breath.

But yeah wouldn’t you sell more 3 series than 5 series? Other thing is the m3 wagon wasn’t planned originally and I think there were hurdles for the US. While the m5 wagon being planned from the start for the US |

looks nowhere near as monstrous as the RS6 Avant.
There used to be a time when a RWD BMW M was distinct and unique but now that all these new 5000lb hoopties get launched with AWD it doesn’t matter anymore!

My understanding is that battery placement was the issue. Some sort of updated rule about the battery being in the passenger compartment is no longer legal. As someone else said, the F81 was never intended for the US so the battery is in the back cargo area similar to most BMW Tourings including my F31 and old 540i. Not sure what is changing with the G99, but I am really hoping it makes it to the US.
