Everyone so far is posting classics, but if you guys ever get your hands on these, would you enjoy it for what it is...? They are all beautiful but I don't think I would ever want to drive them, or they would need some srs restomodding cuz I'd imagine it would be like driving in a cardboard box relatively-speaking.

My biggest fear with a classic would be paint damage. The roads around my house are all chip and oil, so any car going by in the other direction can shower you with pea-sized stones. All my cars have suffered because of that. Plus they seal cracks in the highway with the same oil and pea stone, so you can get pelted there as well.

I think that's a different conversation, although one with which I'm familiar and do not disagree.

A well-known Northeastern restoration shop shared with me years ago that prospective buyers of their restored E30 M3s were surprised by the car's driving dynamics. No kidding, right – a thirty-year old suspension design wasn't driving and responding like the newer, high-end performance cars they were daily-driving. Whodathunkit?

The attraction of classics is the desire to enjoy a particular and irreplaceable type of experience. The nature of that experience is specific to the individual buyer or owner. All of the issues those cars have compared with many of today's cars aren't at all the subject under discussion. We want them because of what they represent, not what they are. This is fundamental to understanding the collector mindset and that of former owners.

Every now and again I lament selling my 1965 (1964 1/2) Mustang with the 225 horse 289, 4-spd. Then I remember the 2/60 air conditioning, (lack of) cornering, 4-wheel drum brakes and their super-dooper stopping ability and unsupportive vinyl seating. I occasionally get the urge to acquire one, but I don't think it would be fun even for a weekend car.

Ya, I understand that mindset, just that I personally am not onboard. I guess I'm too pragmatic, I can admire from afar but if I had to put $$$ into it, I would want a return on performance, because I view cars as more mechanical than art.

A polite reminder that this thread was designed to discuss styling only; power output, handling, reliability, cost, etc., discussions are for another thread.

For example, my own nominee, the 1960s Jaguar E-type is not a great example of reliability and maintainability. I would not own one. But it sure is easy on the eyes!
