yep - have had it in both lungs 10 years apart. Took my daughter to the pediatrician for strep a few weeks ago and her doctor said that they're seeing super high rates of pneumonia and upper lobe pneumothoraxes in children this year.

the same daughter when she was an infant scraped my wifes eye with her nail which put her down for weeks.

I snapped my left tibia and fibula in half landing wrong on a 12ft vert when BMX riding. Then a few years later, my right ankle/leg were ran over by a forklift when I was working at 7-up, resulting in a crushed ankle.

Both pale in comparison to the first headache of my life which happened after my first IED blast in Afghanistan. I wanted to cut my head off, lol.

Wow, you guys are warriors. I once had the urge to be a rider but quickly came to my senses haha. No hockey either after seeing all those insurance claims from my mom's work (broken shoulder, arm, leg, etc), no tx!

Sounds benign I'm sure, but I had a bicycle wreck once that was off the charts (for me). I was peddling as fast as I could to the park where there was a girl waiting to see me, I think I was 12. Anyway, chain snapped and I was peddling so hard that I went over the bars and face first into the concrete. It was the middle of summer, and I was sweating profusely, so I was a full-on strawberry bloody at every joint, chin, forehead, cheeks, all of it. I raced home and laid there for a few days in delirious pain without sleep, and I don't remember even taking an aspirin. For sure I should have gone to the hospital, but kids will be kids.

Reading everybody's posts, my dental nightmare was clearly a lightweight experience. I've been lucky to avoid really bad pain.

I do have sympathy for everyone else who posted in this thread. But if you've never had a Gout attack, fuck you. There's a medicine, Colchicine, that you have to take until you start to vomit, and then you get explosive Diarrhea. Yeah, I didn't make it to the bathroom a few times because the pain was that bad. I was at the point of giving myself a Lidocaine injection and sawing my own toe off.

I've had gout attacks more times that I care to remember. Painful to be sure. And yeah while Colchicine is what the doctor ordered to treat the attack the side effects are about as bad as the gout.

And I was careful with my diet, too. Had a problem with my blood chemistry that made me prone to gout. After getting this sorted have not had an attack in years.

Ah. I had two (left side) within 6 months of each other when I was 18. Had to do VATS the 2nd go around to ensure it didn't happen again.

And yeah, pneumonia is going around like crazy where we live. I had it in September and my son had it last month.

I had VATS in both. Left side was the first and cost $40k. Right side was a few years ago and cost $275k and was done by a robot. Robot didn't do a great job because I can still feel air leaking for a couple weeks after flying or swimming. After swimming, I'm guessing due to the air bubbles moving through the pleural lining, my ribs will be sore for a week.

Wouldn't recommend popping a lung if you don't have to

Agree that there are tons of examples that sound greusome. Putting a joint back in requires a tremendous amount of force to be put onto the bone. Had to have a dislocated toe put back into joint, while it was broken. The digital block was completely worthless. Thankfully it was over in 60 seconds.

Two most painful:

While in Vietnam I was helping our team disassemble our (new) 84 foot tower.
The tower consisted of stacked sections, each about 4’ x 5’ x 6’. Each section
had a narrow catwalk and a diagonal stair/ladder. We’d lift off a top section
with a small clip-on crane, then swing it over the side and let it down. We
were doing fine until the 24 foot level. We had dropped the last set of guy
wires. I was standing in the top section. When I swung the 5th, 30 foot level
section ouboard, the tower tipped. I don’t remember hitting the removed
sections or the ground. I came to my senses 15 or 20 minutes later. I had
a big bump on the back of my head plus a bunch of cuts on my back. By
the time I came out of my fog I realized I was sitting in our 3/4 ton truck
which was sitting on a raft, crossing a big river. I had no shirt, no helmet
and no weapon, and I was disoriented.

Spent the night at an aid station at the Tay Ninh base camp for observation.
Medics only gave me aspirin. By the next day it seemed like every muscle
in my chest and back hurt. This lasted for about 2 weeks. The pain was so
bad I thought maybe I had cracked or broken ribs. A week later, Xrays came
back negative. I was back on duty the day after the incident.

The 2nd deal was adhesive capsulitis in my left shoulder. The pain after
surgery was excrutiating and lasted 6 months. Physical therapy elevated
the pain 5 times a week for a total of 140 PT sessions. I was beginning to
have sympathy for folks who jump off bridges. The so-called pain meds
turned me into a zombie, so all I could do is sit at home and watch the
grass grow. Six f-ing months.

Lookin back, the PT was worth it. Between the surgery and PT I gained
back about 90% range of motion with little pain.

Worst for me was fracturing my pelvis in 5 places along with 5 cracked/broken ribs. Fun times! I spent nearly 3 weeks in the hospital, and was off work for over 4 months healing/PT.

I know where you are coming from Llarry. Just had a root canal last week and a "build up" for a crown the day after. I was in the chair for 3 hours(difficult tooth...not dentist fault) for the build up and during that time I was given 3 nova cane injections for the pain. I hated just seeing those needles getting closer to my gums!! lol

After a knee replacement you have to strengthen that leg and increase flexing it. Instead of slowly attempting to move my leg back further and further while sitting in a kitchen chair, I would swing that leg back with a quick kick movement and scream like I have never done before. My wife would leave the house and walk our dog every time. 1.5 years later my leg is great. No regrets.

I guess it's do I suffer intense pain for a short time or moderate pain for a longer period? Like a band aid, rip it off!

I have broken my wrist, spent a week in the hospital with an ulcer that took several days to diagnose (after several days before going to the hospital), and severed a tendon and artery in my hand that were repaired with emergency room surgery, among other things. But I don’t think any of that compares to what my wife is going through now following a full knee replacement last week. This week is better than last and I’m hoping next week is better than this one. We both knew there would be a lot of pain involved but I think it’s the kind of thing you can’t really understand until it happens.

I had mitral valve repair where they stop your heart, go between your right ribs with small tools into your heart and sew a tensioning ring over the valve to tighten things up. So your entire upper chest is on fire for a little while.
The worst is the drain tube and pacer wires that goe in through your lower right chest and lays on top of your diaphragm to drain fluid from your chest cavity and run up to your heart in case they need to jump start it during your recovery.
After 4-5 days, every time you take a breath it feels like you are being stabbed at the bottom of your rib cage where your ribs come together. The tubes press on the back of your xyphoid process and you cant breathe. That's how the docs know it's time to take the drain out.
Anyway, they give your morphine to make the pain go away which lasts for about 15 min while they get the PA to come in and yank the tube out. 30 min later and you want to live again.
So that's how I know what 10 on the pain scale feels like.
