I don't think the GS system is too bad, I've been in both the private industry and federal and you can die the same slow death in both if you end up in the wrong job. I think if you find the right job whether it's GS or private industry you'll be good to go. Good luck.

So my ladies and gentlemen the army has a finally released me. I'm officially retired out of the military at 27. I feel like I'm setting a world record lol. In already feel like a old man. I went to the VA hospital yesterday and all hose folks look like they are about to die. It is awesome that I get free health care for 5 years. Then after that I just move to Tricare. So now my quest is a job and to start school. I'll be making a trip to seattle tomorrow morning. Anyways just wanted to fill you guys in.

You only get free health care for five years? Is that because you opted for medical retirement? I have free VA care for life.
However, I still just use my civilian insurance. The VA situation in Chicago is laughable at best. But that's another topic for another time. |

And yes, the VA system (especially Hines) is pretty bad and very overloaded. They're opening up a new hospital down in Joliet in an old civilian hospital (Silver Cross I think), so that will help a lot. |

They should give you bilateral carpel tunnel with no problem. Did you also receive a med board or did you get out and claim everything?

Yeah I'd love for them to give me the carpal and cubital tunnel but they're not. I didn't even know I had it until they did tests at the VA hospital a few months after my discharge. I had no idea and they hooked me up to this machine that shocked the shit out of me a bunch of times, and the doc looks at the results as it's going and says, "did you know you have severe carpal tunnel?" I was pretty shocked but apparently it's pretty bad. I guess that's where the muted sense of feel and odd pains come from every once in a while.... Also, the DDD is well documented with MRI from right after I got out (from my civilian doctor), when I was in, they refused to do one. Shocker: they are giving me shit about it because I didn't get an MRI while I was in. Oddly enough, the 10% is from something I didn't even expect. I've got a ligament in my ankle that's holding on by about 10% and isn't providing any stability. I didn't expect them to cover that because I'm pretty sure most of the damage was done before I enlisted. It looks like I might just have to lawyer up. |

just b/c he has 90% doesn't mean he has to have his head in a jar or has to be like Steven Hawkins.
I'm 80% DOD and 90% VA b/c I have a whole lot of issues. I am not paralyzed (anymore) but I have a spinal injury and metal fusion, sciatic/peroneal/tibial nerve damage, foot drop, Right leg neuropathy (CRPS type II), metal plate in my right hand, and PCL reconstruction with metal plug or something in my knee. I can still live a normal (somewhat) life. I can walk and talk, and though medically retired, I currently have a job and living my life. After over 3 years of rehabilitation, everyday is another step forward to recovery --------- OP, if you were medically retired, you should have Tricare Prime for life if you choose too. Not sure about the 5 year thing. Were you PDRL or TDRL? No worries OP on feeling 27! I was discharged at 28!
