Got a job a month out of college.
Graduated with honors on deans list (magna cum laude if the school gave recognition for those achievements). It was about networking more than anything. Started a position I didn't even study for because of my people/interview skills. Used that position as a foot in the door and then transferred onto the team/position I studied for and am loving it. Quit moping (not being dick just a friendly push) and go get in front of some people. It will keep you busy and get your mind off your current situation as well.

Internships are key, they are the foot in the door. Whatever you do don't sit around, find something temporary while you continue to search.

Yeah, they are, but employers typically want interns who are still enrolled in University, not graduates unfortunately. I've always thought getting a job at top tier firms would facilitate the process of getting to the top easier, I guess not if you don't have the connections nor a stellar resume to begin with. Unfortunately, I think I'll start applying to boutique/small firms to get some experience even though it would make it harder to get my foot into a fortune 100 company later on in life.

I found a nice paying job after college and I've been set ever since... D.C. is the place to be right now, especially if you have an internet security background. I'd never hire a shiny grad unless he/she had a strong technical/computer background. OP, who have you networked with? Have you considering relocating? |

Not directed at the OP, but is that all SOCAL is? A bunch of "kids" who drive M3s around texting girls if they want to tap that while they are snort Adderall in their parents basement? I guess when your parents are buying you BMWs in high school this is what happens. -END RANT
I did the military route, it was what I wanted since I was young...I might feel different now, but that is not the point. The Army paid for my schooling at an excellent private university, I graduated with a mechanical engineering degree and went straight to work for the man. I didn't get anything from my parents, no car, no money and I didn't expect anything from them. I am 26 now, and just ordered my M3. How did I afford it? Well no student loans, married DINK(Dual Income No Kids), year in Afghanistan, and generally being anal about saving my money. To the OP, I wish you the best of luck in your search! Keep up the networking, and if you want honest answers about the military route feel free to ask me. |

PS: If you were wondering, I don't do adderall nor text girls if they want to "tap that." Also, the E90 has been sold a long time ago. Can't wait to hop back into one again! Not anytime soon, though.

sorry if , but if you do a kick ass job as an intern, really get along with everybody, know the work your doing, and show great potential, is it possible for the employeer to either a) ask you to come back as an intern again (assuming your still in school) or b) offer you a full time position (assuming your graduating within a semester lets say).
near the end of an internship lets say you get along with everyone including your boss/manager, would it be appropriate to have a conversation such as how my internship is coming to an end and was wondering if there are any full time positions available?

My general rant was directed at the stereotypical mid twenty year old who spends his time posting stupid shit on the Internet. Is my post going to change anything? nope. Will there still be idiots on the Internet? You can count on it. Do I actually need to know him to post that? not at all, that is the point of a stereotype, as incorrect and offensive as can be, in certain circumstances they hold slivers of truth. If you post about how "cool" it is to text girls if they want to tap that, can any reasonable person be blamed for calling WFT? I mean seriously, what lame ass is going on the Internet to make himself feel cool about that? If you think differently...I feel sorry for you. I don't think I am out on left field on this one. I picked that topic because it seems to a popular thread recently, not because I have a vendetta against that thread's OP. In this situation, however I believe it illustrates my point. |

Through internships...and networking with classmates...who you know is just as important as what you know...whatever profession you get into, it's a small world once in it, so you may or may not have a professional reputation before you even get out of school.

I was jobless for about 3 months. My only good internship that I had in college didnt really offer any real world help as I thought it did for my major. It was more of money and partying, which at the time was great.
I would recommend finding something temp. I ended up working for a temp position for a friend and now 14 months later it's my full time gig. I don't love it and it doesn't pay the super money everyone expects out of college, but it's helping me develop and learn things I never knew. If you can find an actual sit down job and not something retail it should help you find something you actually want to do. There isn't much demand at all for first year grads. I know this all to well.

Muwarrior is correct about the BMW-socal thing.
To the OP... I got my first job through a friend; his mom is a director of engineering in a major aerospace company. Got my current job through Monster when Boeing needed a bunch of engineers to work on a new 787 project. Times are very tough these days to find a job. |

and it is totally appropriate.. the worst he can say is "no" why waste the chance? My experience usually is that internship means nothing on a CV.. it isn't real work experience and they give you bobo work. However, it is a great time to make contacts and network!

Unfortunately, most of the people I've seen for entry level positions have come through their school's career placement office. In a well-known international corporation, it's highly unusual to hire a recent undergrad for an entry level position through non-university channels. It's just too risky quality-wise and it runs the risk of damaging the company's long-term relationship with campus recruitment offices.
While I've never hired undergrads outside of university channels, the few times I did interview from non-campus sources, the resumes came from acquaintances or were sent by big-wigs from other departments. Only three things to do now - 1.) temp or get a McJob until you find something else, 2.) start calling anybody you know who works even remotely closely to where you want to end up, and 3.) reach out to a couple of professional recruiting firms to see if they can set you up with some looks (doubtful, but it doesn't cost you anything). Also, your parents are giong to kick you out because you can't find a job right after school? Are they really strict or have you been seriously slacking since graduation? |
