First of all, they have no power whatsoever; it's merely symbolic (although they do exercise some symbolic diplomatic power in dealing with foreign states, from time to time). And I do believe the vast majority of the Brits (I believe something like 74%) supported having the monarchy -- which is a far greater majority than the support that got our Presidents elected.

By the way, the cost of Obama's inauguration was, I believe, north of $150M ($49M from federal taxes). Hardly a "modest affair".

Well, since it's generated an estimated £750 million from tourism (BBC news source) I'm not too livid about it and there has been a nice party feel today which makes a nice change from the usual doom and gloom of present.

What I am livid about is as a British taxpayer is paying idle c*^ts to stay at home and not work. Knock a kid out and you're sorted, council house and all bills paid for, more kids = more cash. Anyways, what bugs me is that I usually go to cnn.com in the mornings to get my news update.
