I had to put my dog under about 2 months ago. He was 13 years old and started having seizures and never was the same. I noticed he was suffering and I always promised him that I wouldn't let him endure such a life. It would have been selfish of me to prolong his life anymore.

I wish you two the best and I hope she rebounds back to a healthy life.

So sorry to hear all this. My last dog had a degenerative spine condition, he was a rescue Greyhound.I had him for 13 years, he saw me thru my divorce, my oldest child going to Afghanistan with the military and my troubles with my younger son as a result of a split household. Needless to say he was my best buddy. I too could not bear it and let him get treatments and steriods etc.. I understand what others say in not letting it go too long as I did. We came home one night, my youngest son was in a outpatient rehab situation and found the dog on the floor paralyzed, he had lost his bowels and tired so hard to get up he rubbed his hind limbs bloody raw. It killed me inside to see him like that, I stayed up all night with him after I cleaned him up and took him in the morning to be put down. Hardest thing I've ever done. Still to this day, 3 years later, I wonder if I did the right thing or if I waited selfishly too long. I really do know what she means to you but please if you think she is suffering you need to consider it. It sucks and I hope she recovers and you guys have a long life together. I've since replaced his place in my house with some adopted cats from a rescue and things are good. Take care.

i have a 6 year old dachshund myself. their backs are notoriously bad because of their long bodies. they don't have any extra vertebrae to compensate for that long body. over the course of their lives, they jump, roughhouse, etc., and it degrades their back. it happens sometime. that's why making sure they don't get overweight is important for them. good luck with the pup. here's mine...he thinks he's people

^^^ mine sleeps just like that, and we laugh at it everytime, it never gets old.

at the vet now, my dog can actually feel her legs pain right now, she is in more pain now than yesterday which is good according to the vet. hopefully she will be better by this weekend. the vet did also say, if she gets worst, it would be better to put her to sleep.......my gf dropped in tears right after that.

our lab does that too. actually wakes me up to get under the covers with the wife and I haha.

for the OP, I'm a complete dog guy. my fam as bread litter growing up. always labs. we've had stil births, dead 2 day old pups, and 2 of ours die younger than 4. 1 from cancer, the other from a uterus infection. they all suck. I would do absolutely anything and everything for my dogs. you are doing that. stand by her. pups can still live full lives w/o their back legs, esp small dogs like her. if ur up for it which I can only assume you are keep her in. she'll be down as long as you are.

must love dogs!

Without causing your pup any undue suffering, I can't imagine not exhausting every possible option before having to make what would be the most difficult decsion of your life.

OP: I honestly don't like the "kill or keep" talk here. The important thing we have to make clear is that if your dog is in pain or is having seizures you may want to seriously look into ending the situation. But if your dog is simply parylized and will never use it's hind legs and is NOT in pain there is hope. It makes no sense for some people to recommend putting the dog down because their dog was in pain if your dog is not in pain. I can tell first hand, I have seen a couple of these dogs at the dog park getting their exercise. They are playfull and still run and play a lot more than you would think.

sorry man.

always sad to experience this

please consider a diet for your dog and , dogs similar to your have back problems . So its important to keep their weight resonable.

another tid bit... dont feed that store bought crap, do a search for high grade dog food... it costs about $.05 more per lb and is much better for your pet.

take care and good luck !
