American Muscle?
Introduction
I love how the OP over on the Chrysler forum says "German cars can never replace American muscle". Somewhat ironic considering that a German company OWNS Chrysler and is looking to dump it due to lackluster performance. In fact, it was worth $36 billion in 1998 and now it's worth... $4.5 billion. Yeah, that's "American muscle" alright. A muscle that's $31.5 billion smaller and weaker than it was in 1998. Concerning The Car So what do you get when you keep throwing cylinders and displacement at a car so it can win red-light races? You get 14/20 city/hwy for the SRT-8. Bravo, Chrysler, in this age of $3/ gallon petrol. You know, I got to actually drive one as a rental once in New Mexico for a week, and it was the HEMI! It was scary fast, but I never felt in 100% control of the car. You hit the gas and got the traditional <One-Mississippi> <Two Mississippi> - <BUCK> - <OH GOD> response of every domestic automatic car I've even driven. I was unable to drive it past 90 because it didn't feel SAFE - funny considering that I've maxed my E-46 too many times to count and felt completely in control doing so. I tried a few emergency braking stops and lane changes and it felt like the USS Carl Nimitz trying to ride out hurricane Andrew. The one overriding impression I got out the 300C was, despite being the fastest car I had ever driven, was BIG DUMB POWER. Parting Comments I'll keep my E-46 and they can have the extra 241 hp, in the case of the SRT-8. At least I'll have a place to take my car to get serviced in five years, something any 300C owner can't say with much confidence. Cheers |

What the hell is going on here? What's the point of trying to determine the best car and deciding that anybody that doesn't own one is just fooling themselves? These are two completely different types of vehicles we're discussing here.
My brother-in-law has a Charger SRT-8. He loves that thing and it is a beast. The exhaust he put on it lets people know he's coming when he's still a few blocks away. He would not be happy owning a 335i. I have a 335i and I love that it is quick and relatively nimble. I don't know which one is quicker to 60 and I don't really care. Beating him off the line won't make my balls any bigger and my car wouldn't be any faster than if he whooped my ass. We each prefer our own cars to each others, and there's not a damn thing wrong with that. Viva la difference, folks! |

__________________________________________________ __________________________________________ Pretty sorry when we have so many folks in BMWs SO FREAKING INSECURE about their car that they have to actually head over to another board and act like little kids. WTF? There are also little Subarus out there that will leave us gasping for a breath in a 335 along with a shit ton of other vehicles, most of which cost less. Not to mention ANY modern Sportbike will make you look like you've sprouted roots and planted yourself. You bought the wrong damn car if what you're worried about is being the fastest, quickest, or best handling car on the planet... THAT's not what these cars are about. It's about balance, feel, and over all performance. You're NOT your Cars, You're not Better, Smarter, prettier or More Handsome because you're in a BMW... Deal with it...

Everything is just turning to speculation at this point. Maybe his fuel pump was already dying. Maybe the color of his car wasnt his first choice. Maybe his cupholders werent big enough and he was holding a drink. Maybe he was trying to decide which was better, the PROcede or the TT at the moment. Maybe he was debating on how to break in the car.
Maybe, this is going nowhere fast.

2007 328i in Germany

Great thread here about differences between "American Muscle" and " Advanced German Engineering".
I want to see the SRT-8 or 300C reach 140mph beside my 328i out here in Germany on the Autobahn and MAINTAIN THAT SAME EXACT SPEED FOR 3 HOURS WITHOUT OVERHEATING!!! See, American muscle is designed to be the biggest, baddest and quickest off the line... and that they are with their weight, displacement and overall size...but like all American muscle cars....NOOOOOO STAMINA, BABY! Over here in Germany, I am constantly seeing other Soldiers burning up their Mustangs, full size trucks, Chargers and Corvettes on the Autobahn. (And yes...of course there are "certain" American sports cars that have been tuned and so forth to do everything German sports cars can, but overall....NOT!) American cars are engineered to sustain 55mph, whereas German cars are engineered for 155mph. That's just the way it is. Plus....I like my 24mpg over the muscle car 8mpg! American muscle will NEVER handle with the same superior performance as German engineering either....American engineering is all speed and all balls....but go ahead and take that hairpin turn at 70mph and see if you don't roll! |

The SRT8 is putting close to 100 more HP to the rear wheels (370 vs. 270); of which it needs only about 60 or 70 rwhp to overcome the additional weight (4200lbs vs. 3550lbs) and match a 335i, so the loss is not that suprising at all; and the SRT8 is better able to make use of that power than is a 335i with an open rear.
If you're getting your panties in a wad because a 335i was beat by a stock SRT8, you'd do well to find a better coping mechanism and perhaps, a better understanding of the facts which allowed such an atrocity to occur The 335i is quick; but these days even a Procede car, while quite respectable, is by no means a serious stop light warrior. |

Oh, and yes, the Germans do make a better car, no question about that; you just pay for it, which many of us are happy to do
You need only change the plugs on any domestic and any BMW to see who put more thought into the car. |

I didn't even realize there was a dedicated SRT-8 community. No matter; all car forums are the same. I honestly have yet to encounter one where the clear majority of members are intelligent, level-headed, and well-informed.
This will be amusing to watch, to be sure.

I'm as big a BMW fan as the next guy, maybe more so, but geez, some of you 335 guys are a bit sensitive. You have a fast car, no boubt, but there are "tons" of other cars that are faster. I'm sure most people don't buy a BMW for racing, more enjoyment.
