Many comments in this thread about Mexico are downright racist and absolutely ignorant.

Mexico builds more cars than Canada as of this year for markets all over the world. As mentioned, Audi is opening a plant here.

99+% of people here have nothing to do with the drug trade which is the only thing that gets reported in the news about our country.

My first 3 series (a 99 E46 sedan) was assembled here from a knockdown kit and its quality was identical to the later BMWs I have bought. Armored BMWs are already assembled here today for plutocrats all over the world, including the US. Do you think BMW would risk quality for their armored vehicles?

Fact is Mexican labor has extremely high quality in the auto industry today with local plants routinely winning worldwide quality contests.

One other thing is that for the U.S. economy this is actually good news compared with the current assembly situation.. Lots of parts for these 3 series would come from the U.S. side since our economies are so tightly integrated. Much more than if 3 series production continues solely in Germany and SA.

Mexican suppliers already provide a lot of parts for the existing BMW Spartanburg plant.

This is the worst thing i've heard from BMW, I had a 02 1.8T jetta (my first car,2nd owner) that car fell apart and ended up leaking oil in my turbine at 69,xxx.

I blamed VW for producing this car for it's poor craftsmenship in Mexico. BMW, PLEASE RECONSIDER!

VW had problems with their quality here many years ago.

This was a VW problem, not a Mexico problem. As has been mentioned, many other cars are built here today with no problems. Even VW has cleaned up its act. All U.S. Jettas and Beetles come from Mexico.

GM not only assembles cars here, it has parts of its worldwide platform engineering & design done in Mexico. A friend of mine is responsible for worldwide braking systems for a couple of their platforms.

Which mistake did VW make? Their cars are selling in record numbers and everyone I know who has a Mexican-made Jetta loves it. I have a couple friends with GTIs (made in Germany) and you can't even tell the difference in terms of build quality.

I have the utmost respect for the U.S. I am cheering for you guys to beat the Chinese in the current Olympics. I think that the Mars landing last night stands as probably the greatest engineering achievement of all time. Now, THAT is something that only the U.S. can pull off.

But we Mexicans definitely can build a quality BMW.

Exactly.. Let's compare how many BMWs are sold in the US compared to Mexico.. It's not BMWs responsibility to just give jobs in the places where it's needed.. The US deserved a plant.
