For all the nays on here I'd understand if it were replacing the 3 series or something. But it isn't.
It's a growth area for BMW and with stringent emissions targets both govt and consumer etc there are only going to be more and more limits to the percentage of their volume that are high performance cars they can produce profitably. My guess is these vehicles will only help ///M by gaining market share for BMW. WRT the CAT I personally think it looks great. Not sure about an ///MCAT though. |

F56
I'm guessing this has a lot of the F56 behind the skin. FWD and Hybrid drive. I hope the next MINI has this same engine choice in it. Maybe even put it in a Roadster for guilt free, silent motoring.

I bought a Mazda CX-5 for 20.5k at sticker ($500 over invoice) .9%
It has twice the cargo room as this for my bikes, a 6spd manual, I am driving like I stole it now 8k miles in and am getting 32mpg on 87unleaded.... As far a FWD goes I would never consider a BMW over a company that has already nailed it.... |

I like the hybrid AWD idea with gas powering the front and electric at the rear. If it drives like a mini, I would imagine it could be a fun second or third car.

a BMW VENZA, nice... it actually doesnt look bad, but FWD.. if you want it for sport enthusiasts, make it AWD, then we'd have something better to drive than an X1

It's becoming alarmingly obvious as of late that BMW has shifted far from building the ultimate driving machine to an "everything to everyone" approach, sacrificing quality for quantity. Let's take a look at how diluted the BMW lineup has become:
Oh, and that's just the confirmed car lineup! Let's try SUVs, too!
Oh, and let's not forget the "exclusive" M lineup:
Then let's not forget that pretty much every vehicle comes with the option of AWD and that the SUVs are no longer going to have AWD standard. There's too many models, just look at how diluted the brand has become. We've got a million SUVs available, and one roadster which doesn't even get an M version anymore. This brand isn't about the ultimate driving machine anymore.

BMW could not become more misaligned with what their core values have been than what it has produced recently. An X everything, GT's that are hideous and not more practical, a 'line' for each model so the marketing people can classify you. Splash on some new paint (that you can already special order), and call it a special edition.
Why not take all that effort towards those models, and make genuine progress in your existing models? Even the M5 competition package is laughable. I have seen much better from BMW. |

+1. most of the people doing the complaining here think M3 is the only car in BMW lineup. Just because you are not going to buy it does not mean other people will not enjoy or buy the car. Everyone does not get their BMW to add, exhaust, tune, big wheels, low susp, etc. Don't take my word for it, look at profit made by BMW within the last calendar year in spite of bitching about turbos, losing their way, weight, EPS, etc. Some of us are not getting any younger and have kids, family, etc. Active tourer concept is a refreshing concept and something i would consider as DD because M5 would be my other car. M5 i would tune, drop susp and all the other crazy stuff. |

I understand what so many people are crying about because no one is taking away your M3s. People need to understand that the M division creates a strong following for the BMW brand but it is not their bread a butter. BMW needs mass market cars to stay profitable and the 3 Series does not fit everyone's bill.
In San Francisco for example, as in many other urban areas, I see small hybrid cars on every block and BMW wants a piece of that market because it sees profitability in it. Every corporation's main goal is to generate profit and those who think otherwise must be delusional. As for the car itself, I like the design and can see the appeal of owning a small and efficient luxury hybrid in the city. |
