I say let the rich be rich, and let the poor be poor. I didn't drive a car until I bought my own 3 yrs ago. I was that guy who you would see walking home in his 2 yr. old shoes in the rain haha. Just because I'm poor now does not make me any less of a person as someone who has a whole lot of money.

I have TONS of older friends who grew up rich and are NO WAY "lazy in life." I've had friends who've grown up rich and are now in grad school. I even know kids who were really rich when they were in high school and they went to college and came back to teach at my high school.

SO like really, your accussation is not even correct. I live with enough rich kids to know that they're not all lazy. Some kids are just lucky to have parents who are rich -- that doesnt mean you can assume they wont get anywhere in life.

I don't think you "older" guys would understand how rich teenagers would behave. There are shows on TV about rich 16 year olds being all stuck up and you base that on every rich teenager out there. My parents are definitely not rich. Just like Enroutte, my parents came from Asia and all they want is the best for me. They want to give me the things they never had. My parents spoil me, but I'm not an ass or anything. I rarely spend any money. I work at my parents' restaurant but I barely get paid anything. I can be lazy every now and then, but if I need to work, I will work. I just don't think it's right for you guys to accuse every rich kid out there of something you see on TV or just on a stereotype you hear. I plan on being successful in whatever I end up doing and giving back to my parents. I'll make sure that they won't have to work anymore when they're older. I will be taking care of them like they did for me.

It's funny how these type of threads always turn out the same. People who are "rich" defending how they got their car, People who don't have as much money and resent the rich people who they think don't appreciate the car they have. The funny part is this is a BMW forum. How many people do you really think would read a bmw forum if they weren't an enthusiast? Regardless of how much money someone makes they're here cause they love these cars.

By the way, my first car was a Geo Metro that my parents bought me (1.0L 3cyl :rocks: ). Then I bought myself a used Toyota Tacoma during college and I can't wait to get a new BMW this coming spring.

I completely agree with what 2006BMW said. I dont think that kids wont learn the "vaule of a dollar" if they're spoiled. Im a good example of that. Got a brand new, remodeled 2002 Camry when i got my license 3 years ago. Then got my 330 3 months ago. Sure i might be spoiled, but i dont go around wasting money left and right. I hate bragging and i hate when ppl say "im so envious of you". Envious of what?? Some ppl go around acting like they're loaded when they're not, spending money like crazy. I think that if you're well off, then you DO know the value of a dollar (that's why you're well off). Not saying that im well off, just stating my opiion.

and if i may add- my uncle is filthy rich: $5.3 million homes. ALlhis cars are BMWs and MBs. But his kids definitely know the value of a dollar. Also when he takes the whole family out to eat (about 45 ppl or so), he would let us order all we want as long as we can finish it. I think it all depends on how one is raised and one's perception the vaule....

Just because a kid has nice stuff does not automatically mean the kid does not value it. My parents never had the money to buy me a really nice car, but they would have if they could. I don't think I wouldn't have valued it. If I had both money and a kid, I probably would get the kid a nice car. It all depends on the individual.

For those of you who are young (16-18) and drive in BMW's, how would you feel if your parents gave you a used Kia instead of a BMW? Would you still defend yourselves and the money your parents have? Or would you just be agravated with your parents because they didn't give you a better car? Just a simple question...

Is that even relevant? I don't think it's a simple question at all. Of course no one would want a Kia if their parents were rich and could afford a $30k car with no problem. I don't think anyone would want a Kia over a BMW no matter what their income is. But yes, I don't know anyone who wouldn't be mad if their parents were loaded and got them a Kia.

i think it all depends. Cus if you think about it, a civic doesnt cost that much more than a kia (we're talkin used here). I dont know about all, but my parents would definitely go with the Civic cus of reliability. I would never drive a Kia...of course i say that now. But i agree with u. It's hard to defend yourself when you have an inexpensive car...

I highly agree. It all depends on the upbringing of the kid. I have friends who come from very prominent backgrounds, drive luxury vehicles, yet they're down to earth. And like 2006BMW said, it doesnt necessarily mean that someone is good even though they have no money. If you're a parent and is fortunate enough to be in a financial situation relatively way better than others, there is no doubt that you want the best for your children, and not just cars of course

bmw 325's are not expensive at all, specially when you consider middle/high income families. I'm 20, go to the University of Miami and drive a 330i, if you wanna talk spoiled there are at least 10 maseratis, 5 aston martins and numerous porsches (boxters and 911) driven by students. Now THAT is spoiled in my opinion, or at least more spoiled than me lol. It makes me wonder their purpose of going to college lol, I have my car and value it a lot and aim for having more expensive vehicles in the future while these are driving italian supercars in their high teens.

If my parents were in a different financial situation, sure, any car would be nice. But.. if mean no offense but if you know your parents can afford a nice car.. why would you sttle for a kia?

Bottom line is that parents should be instilling good morals/values in their kids. A car is only one small aspect of what parent's give their kids. And if the kid is trustworthy, responsible, and does know the value of money to begin with - then I see no problem with indulging a kid. I only see issues with parents who buy expensive cars for their kids who take everything for granted.

OTOH, I know several people who grew up without nice things and developed a serious inferiority complex - leading to all sorts of other personality issues. Bottom line is - with the right type of upbringing - parents giving a bmw is not going to corrupt a kid's personality/morals/values.

In moderation, nice things can give a kid some goals and motivate them to work hard. I sure as hell will not let myself downgrade from my current car. My parents definitely did not give me everything I wanted, but my first car was a 323ci - and it only gave me motivation to work harder. At 23, I'll soon have a law degree from a top school - with a 330i. To the parents - just make sure your kid deserves it.

I guess I'm a bit torn here. I think everyone has very good points about both sides.

But what strikes me is the comments about the Kia versus a BMW. People have stated they'd be upset with a Kia if they knew their parents could afford a BMW. And I think that is what we're all talking about.

People (kids, adults, elderly) have this feeling of entitlement. Kids from more affluent families, especially when given expensive objects, are presumed to have this sense in greater amount. Unless that 16 y/o is earning a lot of money, that car from mom & dad is a gift, not a requisite. It's something they wanted to give you (maybe because you needed it, maybe because they never had one when they were 16, whatever the reason). And then you get upset because it's not as nice as you expected . . . that's the problem.

If people were not spoiled or entitlted, they would be happy with any gift regardless of the cost.

P.S. Yes, I agree, the Kia would suck. But I would appreciate it regardless of my parents' financial status because that's their status, not mine.
