In 2016 I took delivery of an F80 M3 in South Carolina and drove it back to Oregon -- about 3,000 miles. In Utah south of Salt Lake City I was doing 100 mph in a posted 80 zone and went by a state trooper in the median. Oh %$#%! 20 over! There was a Honda Odyssey doing about the same nearby, too. I expected the worst. At the next freeway entrance a different state trooper, accelerating very, very quickly, pulled onto the freeway and pulled the minivan over. I skated... One factor may have been that I had an Oregon temp tag, which is a piece of paper taped to the rear window and the car was Champagne Quartz metallic, which seems to me a difficult color to describe over the radio. Anyway, I was somewhat shaken and kept it to 85-90 after that.

In 1990 I was towing an Acura Integra behind a Chevy Astro, heading to the Solo II Nationals in Salina Kansas. While running 85-90 through eastern Kansas late at night, we were approaching an overpass when the Escort (radar detector) went full "BRAAAAAP".

I caught a glint of chrome off the grill as we passed the overpass (he was tucked in the weeds on the far side).

Started sweating and thinking what to say when the trooper appeared at my door ..... but nothing.

Evidently, at that time of night, in that location, he was waiting for someone who was REALLY speeding.

My take is this: in general, speeding enforcement is a shadow of what it once was*. My perspective goes back to the mid-60s, when enforcement was...everywhere...local, county, state, interstate...everywhere, all the time, day and night. Does that sound like what anyone experiences today? I doubt it, and I certainly don't see that anywhere I travel.

A recent 3,800-mile trip from OH -> SD -> MT -> CO -> OH reaffirmed this for me. Enforcement is simply less present than it's ever been. If you want to speed, your job is to not screw it up by crashing and making a mess so that enforcement has to come out to help clean up the mess.

I don't even bother with speeding aids any more - they simply aren't necessary unless you're trying to make real time. Then you may need the full kit to avoid the one trap that may be waiting for you.

* = most jurisdictions in our country can no longer afford to support fully-staffed road patrols on a regular basis; there are exceptions in some rural areas, but, in general, wages, benefits, and, especially, retirement benefits, have significantly reduced the ability of cities, counties, and states to support the number of officers necessary for meaningful street, highway, and interstate enforcement**

** = I don't suggest that this is good or bad; only that as a driver who has traveled by car around the country for the past 56 years, it's clear to me that patrol officers are few and far between compared to a few decades ago

Yep! It happens all of the time in the hood. Hispanic transients and gang members carry sheathed machetes. As long as it's not concealed, you are good. They are also known to carry a million visible knives in sheaths. You may not recall, but I posted a photo of a transient with at least 6 knives on his belt.

MN is opposite, we have so many damn state troopers it's ridiculous. Many times I've road tripped across multiple states without seeing a single highway patrol, but it's usually within about 20 miles of crossing into MN and theres a trooper. And it's not even just major highways, but in the sticks back roads you'll see em almost every day.

They.are.EVERYWHERE.

They hold thier academy on the post I work at, and I usually see the instructors in the gym. I've asked them why it seems we have so many troopers compared to other states and even they say no idea and they've noticed that as well.
