A recent purchase of mine!

This fell into the bucket of " it's easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission"

"It's just a steel watch, it must have been inexpensive"...
That's what my wife probably thinks looking at my Daytona.

I educated my wife too much. She knows that if I have it, it's worth something pretty substantial.
Over the years, I've done quite well at "investing" in Rolex's.
In the 20 years that I've owned Rolex's, I stand to make about $13K in profit.

Right now, I'm looking to trade a bunch of my watches for a double red sea dweller - fully documented.

I hear that. I only own my 116520, but it has gone up incredibly since buying it only last year. The market seems pretty frothy. It's gone up over 50%! Not mint anymore, I just love wearing it.

Same with my 116710 "Batman"... I could sell it on Bob's Watches for the same amount I paid 4 years ago. I have no interest in selling it, of course, but nice to know that I could get my money back in a pinch.

It is a blue dial and a Datejust 36mm. Actual model number I believe is 16200.

I wanted a less flashy, not in your face dial so I went smaller with the 36 rather that the much larger 40+ mm.

Thanks. I share the same sentiment. I like that it’s not flashy and
in your face. I have the white dial with Roman numeral 36mm Oyster Perpetual Datejust. I like the fact that inconspicuous. I might add the 36mm blue dial oyster perpetual with 3, 6, and 9 on the dial to my collection. My SS Submariner doesn’t get much wrist time at the moment because I’m enjoying the smaller 36mm Datejust. I’m not a fan of the newer, and larger Datejust. It’s too flashy for me. And I don’t go bigger than 40mm.

I had a Sub No Date a few years ago and made the huge mistake of selling it.

I'm looking into obtaining another Sub but with the Date this time. At the moment my DJ is my one and only but it'll be really nice to have both to switch it up once in awhile.

the DJ you had described with the numbers are 3, 6 and 9 is a beauty. The DJs have so many different options regarding the dials it took me months to decide on the one I own now.

Best way to check authenticity is to take it to an authorized dealer.

Ask yourself this question - does the person who gave it to you have the means to gift someone an $8K+ wristwatch? What was the occasion for the gift?

Sorry for being direct, but "this was a gift" is a trope used over and over on the watch forums when someone is trying to pass off a fake. I'm not saying that applies to you, I'm just describing the motivation behind my post.

At the very least it is almost certainly an aftermarket DLC job on a genuine watch - which Rolex will not be happy with, should you send it in for service or warranty. There is a company in the UK - Titan Black - that is currently modifying/selling new DLC'd Subs. Seems to me there was another company doing it a few years ago in the UK, as well. There is a company called MAD Paris that is doing it, too, but they print "MAD" on the dials when they modify them.

I understand where you're coming from and i believe was told it was a DLC watch. My dad is vice president and general manager of a manufacturing company and it was from his boss (the owner) as a high school graduation present as it had come up in conversation.

The owner is very generous and definitely has the means

Did it not come with boxes and paperwork?

He might have them, he basically gave it off his wrist.
I do not have them

Edit: just to point out, i don't care if it is real for resale value, i was just curious.
