I rode over 200,000 miles in my younger days, every day of the year...in snow/ice and even a hurricane. Because of my vertigo episodes, I wouldn't even try to ride my brand new e-bike right now (that has been sitting in the garage for at least two years now after I took a spill in the living room trying to set the seat height). Heck, I can't even walk to the bathroom without falling down!

I worked in IT for the same employer for almost 39 years, where thousands of people knew me and all of the unbelievable stuff that I did over the years. Being forced to take the retirement buy-out separated me (and a few others) from our long-term family of decades. Long story short, no consulting gig will ever bring that sense of family and belonging.

I need to find a full-time job by next spring! I'm way too young to retire, and my retirement account is *severely* under-funded.

Ironically, my now-former employer prided themselves with being the most service-oriented organization in the country in their business category. I seriously could write the book on managing unpaid volunteers from personal experience both at work and for outside organizations, but thanks to the Internet (that I helped build!) nobody buys books any more.....

Mine too! That's why I haven't done it much lately. I don't/won't fly, so road trips are our travelling. It helps that I love to drive and have no problem averaging 700+ miles a day; if need be.

We've been in babysitting (2-3 days a week) mode for just over a couple of years now, and that's a BLAST!

I still haven't done the major things I wanted to do; my garage is still a mess and I have yet to really clean out my desk. Seems I'll get around to it
Some of my friends are defined by their work. Some still work even though they don't have to anymore. Some are retired but haven't successfully reinvented/redefined themselves.

I loved my career and while I was working, it was very important to me. But when I retired, I was lucky enough to fill in that time with other things. I miss work sometimes, but not enough to jump back in. Being able to do what I want when I want is so awesome. I worked my ass off to get to this point and I'm darned well going to enjoy it. I was retired 5 years before I finally got my garage clean. My office is finally cleaned up; all old papers are shredded and all important stuff is now electronic. I've offered my office space to my wife to expand her quilting and hobby area. My priorities are kids, grandkids, friends, travel, hiking, skiiing, senior softball, naps, eating, and drinking...oh and Bimmerpost

Great post! I'm six months from my planned retirement and feel like I have the same view as yours. I'll work every day leading up to retirement with the same devotion and dedication I've given my entire working life, but on day one of retirement, I'll turn it off and focus on being retired.

I loved my job and I worked with great people. I wasn't pushed out, could have stayed on. I didn't want to. I tried to retire once, plan was for early 2020, but COVID came and since I was going to be stuck at home I decided to keep working and get paid for being there. I finally cut loose in 2022. All I can tell you is, have something you REALLY want to do BEFORE you retire, so that once you retire you won't just be sitting around. For myself, I'm working on old cars and loving it. I haven't looked at a line of code, or even a Unix command line for that matter, since the day I left. I've been back a couple of times to break bread with some of my old compadres, but when I'm with them I'm reminded how glad I am not to have to go there and do that every day anymore.

Same here. It's been 30 years since I left, and it wasn't at all hard to leave behind.

Just learned that 3 of my ex-coworkers have died so far this year; one was probably 10 years younger than me. So far, that makes 7 or 8 that I know of (I should also be one of those as my cardiologist said in 3/18 there was no medical reason I was alive with 100% blockage in my left main artery) out of around 70 controllers. I guess the career really is a killer...

The other day I was sitting in my dermatologist's waiting room (which is small) and this couple came in and started eating McDonald's and watching videos on their phone with the volume turned up. They were laughing and talking and eating, all at the same time. RUDE!

Luckily I was called in to be seen 'cause I was just about to say something.
