I know she considered that, but felt the the tattoo would be the worse option. She likened it to a pepperoni on a pizza since she has no protruding nipple at all (...currently just an inch long scar line on each breast).

I guess you wouldn't know till you were in the situation, but like you, I would have thought that would make me feel odd. It is just conditioning of course, which can be changed, and its really the only reason why I would find it strange, but yeah, that's actually an interesting question.

And Sara's right - you can get them tattoo'd on. I think there are a number of ways you can go about the operation to render a really good outcome both surgically and cosmetically. My wife has just started to learn some of the procedures to preserve the breast cosmetically while still getting a good margin on the cancer so that the chance of recurrence is lessened, and she's been really happy with how her patients are turning out. Of course, they have no clue how much worse it could have been if they got a surgeon (generally male) who don't care about the cosmetics, they just go in and lop the breast off more or less lol. So she doesn't get a thank you or anything, but she never went into it for that anyways.

From formerly working in a tattoo studio, I've seen all kinds of crazy shit. The coolest/cutest nipple tattoos that I've seen are where the areola color was matched and made into a heart. Pretty damn sexy.
