My first “floppy” drive was an audio cassette player, hooked up to a
Timex-Sinclair BASIC computer. It took about 6 minutes to load a
program. I still have it.

I had the cassette player, too. Hooked up to an Atari 800 computer. And yeah, it took a long time to load. Sometimes failing to load.

In the 80s I used to do computer operations. This involved swapping out 200 meg disk platters for the evening batch and processing runs.

Photo of disk . Unlike photo I didn’t look this glamorous towards the end of all night shifts.

I had the same experience. Sometimes the program didn’t load. One had to
be patient.

My favorite BASIC program was a crude flight simulator. I learned how to
view the code after it loaded, then modify it for fun. I had the little airplane
going 1000 MPH while flying below sea level. 🤣

An early job I had was as a computer operator. Initially an IBM 370 /138 with the memory add on. Sales people convinced illiterate management that a Burroughs could replace it easily. (liar). The company kept it for about 8 months before suing Burroughs and replacing it with a new model IBM 43?? I forget.
Anyway, the Burroughs had removable disc packs like those. These were unlabeled so in a moment of misdirected helpfulness I slapped a gummed label on one and promptly destroyed the disc when I spun it up. Brilliant
Didn't get fired or have to pay for it. Lucky

Several years ago I was getting knee pain. Squats, lunges and stair stepping made the pain go away. Hope it stays gone.

Was an interesting period of processing. The rise and fall of mid tier or super minis.
IBM had also been solid and still are on their game in this regards.

That label wouldn’t have gone down well. Super expensive disks at the time. I managed something similar when printing the cheque run for insurance payouts. Got the cheque sequence out by one on the finance system and hadn’t realised it.

About a month later accounts payable where doing reconciliations. A few thousand cheques were cashed but the bank req wasn’t working. I think the finance team had to manually correct the cheques taking a small team about 6 weeks to correct. Kept my job but the please explain to the company exec was a character building experience 😳

I went through the same kind of learning experience and also managed to keep my job. I concluded that yes, I'd obviously made a serious and costly error; but, good people were very hard to find, and I needed to up my game so that I didn't make avoidable mistakes again. I did that and shortly thereafter was assigned to a program training computer programmers (today they are called "software engineers").

Looks like a 2305. The disk pack, that is, not the model – her numbers would be more interesting.
