At least your user name didn't get highlighted for being on the low side of mediocre.

Wifey and I have been discussing this test for a few days, She holds a Master's degree in linguistics from Ohio State and is an editor of a long-standing quarterly journal, so she's no slouch when it comes to vocabulary. She thinks, and I agree, that 30k+ words in a person's vocabulary is way low. As I posted before, there are 250,000 words *at least* in the English language. There's no way there are 220,000 words she doesn't know. And there are other issues with it. For instance, they often list as antonyms or synonyms words that aren't even the same part of speech, noun vs verb.

Agreed - the term synonym is used very loosely here. Perhaps if they had gone with "low-ranking thesaurus synonym that doesn't really mean the same thing but we included nonetheless."

Noticed this too on a few. The parts of speech disagreement was something that really threw me too. From a methodology standpoint, this test was put the best. The first red flag, as you pointed out, was that is wasn't even a grammar test. Heh.

I agree with the above. My coworker, who has the best vocab I have ever been exposed to, only scored 30350. Based on this I'd say that there is little correlation between scores and actual word count, no matter what they say. My coworker estimates that her vocab is between 75,000 and 100,000 words and she uses 10,000 to 15,000 on a regular basis which is very high.

Interesting exercise.

Biorin , time for an update!

No i just had a period where I read all classic literature for a number of years. I go back and reread them periodically. Several 100 of them.
