bmw needs to get bloated and have lots of segmentation of watered down products with style and no real substance. that way in 2020 when they go back to basics and build the next M3 its gonna kick ass. good job bmw. crank out the fwd crossover covertible. just get that out of your system by the time i need another new M car.

BMW really has developed a talent for building ugly cars.
After the abominations that were the GT models and the Active Tourer, now this further proof that aesthetics and BMW are truly antipodes. They are all getting boxier in design, the current X3 and X5 already pointed in this direction and look worse than the predecessors.

That doesn't look like a BMW kidney grill to me. I don't know what kind of grille it looks like, but BMW isn't it to my eye.
All the best.

More impressions of the BMW Xcite. A more visual crossover than the typical X model.
The exterior and interior design will also be different from today’s BMW lineup. Its a segment that is going to increase over the next few few years Although BMW’s design freeze is still several months away, most proposals are quite progressive and polarising visually. The styling is sharp, solid but very youthful. Designs presented feature a wider track and stance. A more compact greenhouse on top of a more defined than usual body than normal X models. A long nose, long roof with optional full length panoramic roof and a edgy mix of M Sport and X-line packet styling aerodynamic elements. XCite will be available with three- and four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines and with six-speed manual or automatic transmissions. Xcite will also be offered with eDrive plug-in Hybrid.

Why not just make this the next X1. It's a great looking car and right size the replace the X1...and there is no need for another model.

Why are people so butt hurt about Bmw going with these new models?!? They still have the M3/4 with more power than ever and lighter than its predecessor! m5-m6?! Crazy power! M2 coming soon!!! There's nothing to complain about. The company is expanding the customer base is expanding they are building cars the people want. There's a model for everyone now.
Nothing wrong with it at all. Bunch of cry babies.

It is exactly as e92ben says - people should be celebrating BMW creating all these niche models since they'll sell like hotcakes and give the M division more money to go balls to the wall insane with the M models. If you don't like the niche models, you don't have to buy them, and you certainly don't have to drive them. To each their own, though.

It is not just BMW. Porsche,Audi and Mercedes are rapidly expanding their model ranges. To lay this at BMWs door only as if they are the sole destroyers of their soul is not fairly accurate.

it refers to purity of philosophy....these days BMW seems to have no philosophy related to actual driving dynamics. The only philosophy is to sell more cars to all types. Sorry but that isn't the philosophy the small percentage of 'enthused' drivers wanted in our BMWs. I don't blame the company for wanting to make money----but i do blame them for diluting the BMW marque into just another brand, really. Then again....brands like Audi have also lost their philosophy (although less so) so i guess everyone is going downhill together? in the next 10 years...When the ENTIRE BMW lineup becomes "X-drive" then we will see a 'retro' RWD concept car at an Auto Show and think "ahhh, that's what BMW used to be!" and everyone will go ape shit. You can have this badge, without any royalty: BMW M0. a tiny 2-door, RWD coupe with hydraulic unassisted steering, minimal electronic stuff, light weight, small engine, high MPGs, and stiff as a un-neutered dog's woody.
