Why not offer the maintenance a la carte like MB? Lower the initial cost of the car while they're at it.

Reduced service and maintenance - not a small deal, but given their lofty sales achievements, brand expansion, and steady growth, the bean counters figured to add a bit more to the bottom line. Will def miss the free wiper blades; but most of the services were dictated and regulated by the onboard computer anyways, which kept things at 1 oil change and set of wipers a yr, and brakes/pads and clutch when needed (maybe the 4th yr, maybe not).

If buying a car meant I couldn't afford to put a set of wipers or brake discs on the car at my own expense, I think I might realize that I should buy a lower priced car in the first place.

I guess we should wait to see any developments in that front in the upcoming months. Cheers! |

This is bothersome. I agree the lease crowd won't be affected but those who purchase will definitely think twice. Brakes are not cheap on these cars, the wiper blades are a wash.
First BMW cancels Maintenace on warranty transfers and now this....doesn't do much for my fading impression of the company. But I'm 1 of tens of thousands. |

This is a major difference for serial owners like myself and, indeed, my entire family. Collectively we own 12 BMWs among 7 individuals. Thought I love the driving dynamics of BMWs, I would be forced to look at other brands if the free maintenance went entirely away. Cheers-mk |

To my mind, the issue is the durability of certain parts. My X1 has always had a weird brake issue, and they've changed the front brakes already once at 10k. It's not tracked or abused. I'm now considering a Mazda CX-5 as a replacement, similar driver enjoyment but a big discount. On an M car, people should really do their sums if they keep their cars for a short time, or lease. You wouldn't want a $3-4K parting gift on your lease end...

Every other BMW official pic or video of the M3 or M4 is on a track. They know you track, and unless you actually race they have no official reason to deny free maintenance.

I purchased my M6 because it allowed me to tip my toe into semi-exotic drivetrain ownership while minimizing financial risk. This is similar to my decision on the i8, though I was enamored of the advanced drivetrain concept, as well. If I am asked to assume more financial risk, I will definitely move to more exotic brands on this type of vehicle. Cheers-mk |
