I refuse to run non PAO / Group IV oil now... which Motul /castrol/penzoil/just about every other oil is out of the question for me, unless im doing alot of track days then it's 300V.

Ravenol is very expensive, so if my UOA and VOA looks good on Amsoil on my other car, I may switch to it on the S55.

I am curious as to what is the difference between the 2015 428i N20 and the 2016 428i N26. The 2015 428I N20 calls for 0W-30 and my 2016 428i N26 calls for 0W- 20? Why did BMW change the oil weight?

The engine hasn't changed. What has changed is that BMW is looking to get better gas mileage and emissions from the engines. 0w20 allows the car to get up to temp faster and it is better for short trips which is what a lot of drivers are doing.

As for how good 0w20 protects the engine long term, that's up for debate.

I'm planning to use 0w30 LL-01 which is still approved for all years N20/N26.

Thanks for reply. I plan on driving from NY to Florida. The 0 - 30w sounds like the better choice over the 20w for the longer trip. I also used the BMW oil.

Depends where you live. Here in Germany the dealers near me use Castrol Edge Professional and both my X3 and 340i get 0W-30.

We use to get Castrol until about two years ago. Then Shell took over. I am sure that it was a sponsorship thing and not that Castrol was inferior.

Castro 0w40 Euro (made in germany) is majority PAO based, as is Castrol 0w30 Euro (Made in belgium). These two out of the entire lineup are the better ones made out of PAO. Motul has a lot PAO formulated oils as well, like the 8100 series. 300V is ester based. What's the issue with these PAO based formulations that you don't want to use them?

I am kid of an oil freak. I was a maintenance supervisor in a Power plant my whole life (Mechanical Engineer)Done lots of oil analysis both work related and for my cars.

Viewing thousands of oil analysis on BITOG.com. I have pretty come to the conclusion that oil is oil.

My choice now however. QS Ultimate Durability. As far as filters Fram Ultra. This filter has a 99% efficiency at 20 microns. Most filters (if they actually publish their ratings are 99% at 35 to 40 microns.

GM did a test some years back and indicated a 40 micron filter had 3.4 times the wear as a 15 micron filter. Filter is more important than the oil IMHO.

Interesting. I use the Fram Ultras in the other cars, the BMWs get the Mann.
I didn't realize the Ultras came with the o-rings and crush washer until now.
On amazon the fram is over 2x the price as Mann.

I use 5W-30 Pennzoil Euro-L, one of the few oils I can easily get with BMW LL-04 for my diesel engine, pair it with a Mahle filter

I buy the Mahle filters off rock-auto $11/each
and the oil from Walmart online, it's like $22/5 quart

I also buy two oil changes at a time to get the free shipping off Walmart's website

I do 5k mile OCI, at 5k I do it myself, when I hit 10k on the CBS I take it into the dealership for the free change. They do use 0W-30 but don't think it hurts to switch back and forth.
