I will admit..most of my posts in the hockey thread were with some alcohol interference, so no worries.

Not sure what to do with my cash. Kinda afraid to invest now. I am taking a year off work to spend time and babysit my newborn son and obviously money will be needed to pay all bills and buy all toys etc

Ehh, not sure it's appropriate to post on the internet.
I will say that I read something a few months ago stating most Americans wouldn't be able to pay for a $1000 emergency, which is a bit alarming. Some people are just terrible with money. My family grew up on the tighter side of budgets, so I was always a good saver. I mowed lawns and stuff at 10 years old and had enough to buy my first car at 16 and have kept saving/investing since. I have friends who are married, and their dual income totals over 300 grand, yet they never seem to have any money. They drive older cars, live in a decent house but not a mansion, and yet they have finance problems. I work with people who are well into retirement age making 6 figure salaries and say they can't ever retire. Where does it all go?

ewww - you think I would be driving a honda civic when I am making $300k! Sorry kids you are going to public school - daddy needs a nicer car. $30k a year on cars sounds better. |

Our compulsive retirement saving has us living "paycheck to paycheck", allowing us to put 50% of our combined income towards retirement. We can easily pause that at any moment should we encounter a serious disaster that requires more than what we keep on hand in savings at all times. Works well. Thankfully, in 20 years, we have never had an unforeseen bump that overran our savings account. |
