The question is, do luxury buyers put a BEV into their consideration set because of the features or because of the looks or both? I'd bet the answer is both, not one or the other.

I'm in the process of buying an SUV and considered multiple BEVs: porsche taycan cross, model x, audi e-tron. The Model X was considered, but lost on looks, while the iX is out on looks alone: it's unappealing enough for me, I don't care about the features. The Audi also lost on looks, but also features.

The Porsche t-cross was my preferred vehicle, but the range + network just won't work for me ... if I knew for sure it could use the Tesla network I may have gone for it, but right now you can't so it was a no-go.

That left me with PHEVs & ICE. Given the supply constraints right now, I ended up ordering an X5M.


Add it all up and I'd say BMW's market analysis is getting it wrong; the mistake is likely in the realm of asking familiar vs unfamiliar: "which are you more likely to buy: a battery vehicle or an ICE vehicle?"

Or they made a product and are trying to figure out how it fits in to a quickly changing landscape ...

I would not take a pass. I would buy a new car if you need one.

Here is what will drive MSRP increase (besides the QE, FED etc)
1) upcoming shortage in polymers
2) increase in price of aluminium and steel
3) overall cost to produce due to higher energy bills going up
4) upcoming switch to green tech
5) upcoming increase in labour costs due to inflationary pressures

BMW will try to offset this a bit by:
1) bundling more features into the car
2) focus on higher end models with higher MSRP for margin retention
3) stop making cars which had lowest margin - permanently (they already did it now to adjust, but it will be a thing)
4) focus on model of selling you subscription based services with your technology product aka The Car
5) reduce working hours in factories to account for the above and balance out labour costs

I would pay sticker now, because in few years these prices will be higher, and take advantage of still very low rates in order to make the end total price still bearable.

Yeah… We're amendings orders here in Russia and other markets do the same ofc. Which is sad. But the other option is just to lose the order at all.

I would have jumped on a X4 but could not pay extra money for a smaller car, so I went X3. I was changing from an Jag E-Pace for more room, so I went all in.
