when I got my X1, I thought the M sport's included paddel sifter was just a gimmick, based on my experience with a previous car with paddle shifter.

however, after a year, I find myself using paddle shifters almost 80% of the time.

when the DCT is in auto mode, I actually don't think it's that bad. I've been driving since 1980 and I adapt myself to every car that I've owned. (yes, I know it should be the other way around)

The transmission and/or throttle mapping just paused to decide what to do. Meanwhile I’m in the opposing lane with oncoming traffic. After an almost second long pause the car furiously accelerated and I was able to complete the pass.
Last week I was inching into a parking spot with a high curb, and the car shut down twice. This was a rare case where I hadn’t turned off the auto start/stop. Frustrating!
I don’t want to have to change the way I’ve driven for over 4 decades to “accommodate” the peculiarities of this vehicle, and I don’t want to have to use Sport mode as I am averaging 31.9 mpg over 12,000 + miles of mostly mountain driving.
The transmission is fine in normal around town driving - as long as auto start/stop is shut off - but if I wasn’t able to defeat the auto start/stop I would have sold this X1 within a month of buying it.
i agree.. unfortunately DCT are more efficient, but the lack of torque converters makes it a very laggy transmission.
At least you can defeat the stop start .. on the 23D mild hybrid it's not possible.. and you have to put it in sport or low .
But then you live with the high revs and extra fuel usage !
I would gladly go back to my X3 8 speed ZF transmission - a dream. This one in the X1 is crap from a driveability point of view (try Europe where we have roundabouts almost every mile !!)
