No matter how much you dislike it, American can = citizen of the United States of America. You do not get to choose how English works. Just because the word American CAN be used to describe inhabitants of North and South American does not mean it HAS to be used in that sense. The "American" you used and the "American" he used have to entirely different meanings.

Also, this thread is full of people who need to stick their foot in their mouth.

You can have dual allegiance but when the two nations become enemies, then you need to decide who to support. After picking a side you'll be a traitor to the other side.

My thoughts in response to several of the posts on this thread:
1) Patriotism to my country does not necessarily mean I must be patriotic for my government; to suggest otherwise completely undermines the foundation on which this country was constructed (e.g. the Bill of Rights). It is one of our most fundamental rights as American citizens to question -- of course in a civil and reasonable manner -- the motives and actions of our government. A country is not defined just by its government; it is defined by a myriad of things: its people, its society/culture, its economy, etc.

As for the physical definition of our country (i.e. our borders), our borders weren't defined by government; they were (and are) defined by our relationship with other countries. Big difference; the status of our government (good, bad or otherwise) would be completely irrelevant if the rest of world decided to militarily take over our country and the dissolve the US out of existence.

2) Allegiance to one person, group or cause is not mutually exclusive to our desire to have allegiance to any other person, group or cause. It only means that if that allegiance we pledged contradicts our desire to have allegiance to the other person, group or cause, then the first overrides the other. But to the extent it doesn't contradict, then I don't see why any American citizen can't have multiple allegiances (which, by the way, is allowed via multiple passports, as someone had mentioned).

For example, if the US and England are allies (as they are now), can't I have allegiance to both? Isn't it also true that because of our allegiance to the US and because of our allied relationship with England, we have a duty to defend England as well? Thus, in this case, I don't think it is improper to be patriotic to both the US and England if one chooses to be so. This argument can extend to any other country to which US has an allied relationship with.

Edit: I guess to keep my post from being moved to the Politics sub-forum, I'll take a stab at answering the OP's question. In my experience, girls/women (Asian or otherwise) tend to value societal acceptance more than men. Thus, you'll see this effect in other cultures in the US, not just Asians. Men also tend to be more nationalistic than women and so will be more conservative in preserving their original cultural identity.

Right, you are no longer allied with the both sides. Which is why I said that a dual allegiance to opposing entities logically doesn't exist.

I speak Dutch(doh), Frisian(a very old Germanic language , English is based on that), and people from i.e. the Amsterdam area hear I have a Frisian accent. I don't care.

But when I speak English ,some USA people think I'm from Australia LOL. Dunno.

And when I speak Spanish I don't have an accent at all(my Colombian wife says that). German? Definitely with a Dutch accent...

I don't speak asian btw.
