It wasn't about hockey, this was the start of the Quiet Revolution for French Canadian in Quebec. This can't be compared to the stupid riot in Vancouver.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Riot
Quote:
The Richard Riot was a riot on Saint Patrick's Day (March 17), 1955 in Montreal, Quebec. The riot was named after Maurice Richard, the star ice hockey player for the National Hockey League's (NHL) Montreal Canadiens. Following a violent altercation where a linesman was hit, Richard was suspended for the remainder of the 1954–55 season including the playoffs. Montreal fans protested that the suspension was too severe; the team's largely francophone fan base claimed the length of the suspension was motivated by Richard's French-Canadian ethnicity. Outside of Montreal, the suspension was seen as justified and, if anything, too short.
During the first game following the suspension, fans at Montreal Forum reacted negatively to the presence of NHL president Clarence Campbell. His presence provoked a riot at the Forum that spilled into the streets. The riot caused an estimated $100,000 in property damage, 37 injuries, and 100 arrests. Tensions eased after Richard made a personal plea accepting his punishment and promising to return the following year to help the team win the Stanley Cup. The suspension cost Richard the 1954–55 scoring title and his coach, Dick Irvin, his job.
The riot was a sign of rising ethnic tensions in Quebec between English and French Canadians. The Richard Riot has taken on greater significance in the years that followed; the sight of French Quebecers rioting in defense of a Québécois hero has led some to believe it was a significant factor in Quebec's Quiet Revolution.

If they don't have it in Canada, they better pass a law that anything goes when defending your life (and property) during riots. That way, the girls would just floor it through the mass killing some in the process without punishment - AND sending repair bill from body shop to families of dead ones to pay. Which they would be forced to by the law.

I bet you the next riot will not be a riot, no matter how drunk the idiots are.
Actually it is legal to use lethal force in Canada if the use of force is justified. e.g. there was a judo instructor who was attacked in Jasper and hit in the back with a hatchet. He killed his attacker and was never charged.

When it goes to Canadian courts, it's about a reasonable use of force. If you were being attacked by a group that big and there's only one person...yeah, it's legal to mow them all down. No court will convict someone who had to get away (and happen to kill several idiots while doing so).

To be honest, with a crowd that big, even with a gun it wouldn't have done any good. Sure you might hurt a few but these guys were drunk and stupid. They would have rushed you anyway and you only have a certain number of rounds. A machete on the other hand though...

That video really pisses me off too. I hope those guys get major jail time and have the rest of their lives ruined. And even though no one was killed, one person was critically injured. I'm surprised no one died to be honest.

"You die first, get it? Your friends might get me in a rush, but not before I make your head into a canoe, you understand me?"

You are a idiot much like the other idiots in that riot. To hate a whole country because of a few thugs in one city is quite extreme to say the least. Should I hate Americans now because a moron like you made this comment? Grow up!

I'm absolutely embarrassed to be living in Vancouver right now. Perhaps the NHL should ban Vancouver from ever having its hockey team ever again, even though it pains me to see this, but it's better for the overall good.

I don't understand why people riot most of the times here in the states or Canada. Rioting over a game is pointless, it's a losing battle. In the end you'll get charged with something. There should be much harsher punishments for riots and looting. In that video the people taking part should be charged with fines and jail time, and the rest should be fined as accomplices.
