Golden Retrievers are like, geniuses.

My best friend has one and we went camping a few yeares ago and we got lost and her dog found us the way back. I fed him chocolate.

Their dookie is HUGE though. EW. Who cleans that?

Hey, Enroutte - chocolate is poisonous to dogs (old news)! Leads to liver failure - makes sense because dogs were not bequeathed the ability to metabolize excess sugar. So are grapes. And onions. And many different kinds of flowers. And alcohol. Among other things. If you keep up with the latest canine health/diet research...

Are there any fruits dogs can eat, or are they generally all off limits because of the sugar content?

Scientists are too lazy to do the health research behind various fruits - hence the reason why most people today don't even know that grapes have a toxic effect on dogs (some books today still recommends feeding dogs frozen grapes as treats).

A lot of people just play it safe and give them veggies. Most dogs love carrots, lettuce, and some like cooked corn.

In fact, dogs can't even taste anything sweet - their tongues don't have the right tastebuds - making fruits/sweets even more worthless for dogs.

EDIT: While sweets/fruits make doggy breath stinky, veggies actually seem to improve their breath! One of the main reasons why I like giving them carrots. They didn't like carrots at first but just like monkeys, when they see you eating carrots, they'll eat them too.

One of my Shih-Tzus eat veggies like they were pieces of meat...but then again he eats anything, recently a glass cup shattered on the floor and he tried to eat one of the pieces. Vegetables also improve their immune system; you can't go wrong with them.

Also, MUSHROOMS, do not feed your dog mushrooms.

I had a beagle named BUNDLES

and I fed him carrots + celery once.. I'm not sure what made his poo wet.. but it was one of those two. GROSS

like.. it was like..chunky pudding-- off-colored, chunky pudding

I don't think there's anything wrong with bananas. Then again, most scientists don't do the necessary research to test if there's any long-term effects via various fruits. Who's going to want to use dogs as laboratory animals? Very rare these days.

Some veggies to stray away from feeding the dogs: asparagus, onions, chives, and garlic. Dogs are pretty good with these, though - they probably won't like them in the first place unless they are extremely curious and/or starving.

Keep the dogs away from anti-freeze from garages and/or the streets. Smells good and tastes good to the dog but extremely toxic.
