Houston is a major metropolitan area whereas we consider Denver a small town - people's commutes are further here in the 4th biggest city in the nation...

Houston has as many people in it as the ENTIRE state of Colorado, so you can imagine....

this is our second "freezing rain" closure within the last 4 days...

freezing rain is worse than actual snow, because snow sticks to the ground...

freezing rain hits the ground and creates a layer of frozen ice on roads and bridges......

True, freezing rain does create an icy mess anywhere. While the popluation of the entire state of Colorado is about 5.2 million with around 2.9 million of those people in the Denver Metro area, it is not exactly what I would consider a small town.

All the schools and government offices in our State were closed today.

Not because of snow, ice, etc.

But because of subzero temperatures. It was something like -50 degrees Fahrenheit at one point early this morning (factoring in windchill).

That was a new one for me.

Tried to rush home from work before it got too bad but i was too late. My driveway is steep as shit and didnt want to risk it. Now my car is outside for the night and this is what i walked out to a bit ago

My normal commute to work down here is about an hour. Today took about an hour an a half. I was literally the only car on the road for 80% of that drive.

People down here do not know how to drive if there is snow or ice. Just last week I stopped on my way in to help two kids (thats right, two different cars) who went off the road because of ice (mind you there was a truck in the ditch on the exact opposite side of that road from the ice).

There is a lot of black top down here that is great for accumulating black ice, but nothing to bring life to a dead end. People just don't know how to litigate their speed to make up for slick conditions.

Not to mention, they close schools the day prior to the snow and the day of the snow. Shit, I used to have to go to school in 2' of snow.

While I understand it may not be a common occurrence, common sense should tell most to simply slow down or just stay home. It's not like this storm was a surprise. A lot of black top? What the hell else is there to pave a road with? There's no reason for kids to be sleeping over in their schools. It's just nonsense.

What I was used to in Michigan was a lot of siped (grooved) pebble/concrete roads, more so than blacktop / asphalt. There are numerous mixtures used for paving roads, LaFarge is a large company that offers these kinds of products, for industrial building as well.

Common sense should tell people to slow down (which a lot do), but younger drivers down here don't know that because snow is a rare occurrence. Also, a lot of businesses do close and people do stay home because they are afraid of driving during conditions they aren't accustomed to.

I agree, it is nonsense, but its precautionary measures southern states take to keep the roads as accident and injury free as possible. For those of us who have grown up driving in a couple feet of snow, it is not a big deal, its second nature.

so, due to this stupid Houston weather, I woke up yesterday with strep throat.

my kid's school was closed so my wife and I stayed home with the kids...

woke up with my tonsils feeling as if they were the size of door nobs......

after taking medicine to hopefully relieve them of the swelling, it didn't work...

had to run to my mom's house to get some antibiotics - I drove through freezing rain HAHA !!!

it hit the windshield fairly hard, but it wouldn't stick. it just broke when it hit the glass...

I live in a small county that doesnt get salted. Sure i could drive in it but why risk it?

Also i would love to see how great you can drive in ice. Up north yall get fluffy snow down here we get more of a mix so its 2 different worlds

North gets a mix of both also. Yeah, the snow is much more bountiful, but the same instance as down here, the roads get plowed and slush is left behind, and then freezes again over night and turns the roads into skating rinks. The northern states just have more implementation to take care of it compared to here in NC.

My drive through Hillsborough this morning was pretty terrible, I have to admit. It was unplowed and unsalted for about 12 straight miles to get to Roxboro, I was the only one on the road, it was definitely slick, rear end got squirrely a couple times going 10 mph under.
