When I first began lifting/squatting in 2006, I had managed to get up to a 450-ish lb. squat. At the time, the depth of my squat was only at parallel or very slightly above parallel. I stopped squatting after awhile to focus more on my Capoeira development. Fast forward to mid-2014..... Last year I decided to work on my squat depth to obtain a well below parallel back squat (...also known as "ass to grass"). In order to achieve that, I started from scratch and worked my way up the weigh range; I did the same with my full ROM bench press. When I started SMOLOV, I could ATG one rep 335 lbs. comfortably, but I possibly could've performed a 1RM at 350 lbs. as well. I erred on the side of caution and started the program using 335 lbs. as my squat figure. About 6 or so weeks later I successfully did 405 lbs. ATG for one rep, and the Intense Mesocycle of the program was based off of that. I am now shooting for 425-450 lbs. this coming Thursday. In very real numbers, I have gained a solid 70 lb. increase in my squat thus far. If I pull off 425 lbs., that'll be a total of 90 lbs.; at 450 lbs. it'll be a total of 115 lbs. added to my squat in 13 weeks. It's amazing how effective the program truly is. I'm a much stronger person squatting that amount of weigh at the depth that I am. I'll be videotaping the attempt(s) as well, so I'll post it here. |

So do you have an actual spotter, or just depend on Squishy's curl rack? I don't have a workout partner, and am pretty anti-social in the gym because once I start talking, I quit lifting.

I go to one of those mega-gyms. . . because it is within ~1 mile of my home.
I always keep an eye open between sets, but have only helped out a few times when I've seen plates slipping. Just not sure some times whether ego would get me yelled at if I spotted "un-invited" |

Well, I must say that I'm EXTREMELY impressed with the efficacy of the SMOLOV program. I have added a solid 115 lbs. to my squat in 13 weeks. The claims are legitimate.
Here are a sequence of videos from tonight. My first 1RM attempt was at 425 lbs. It went up easy, so I powered through 450 lbs. The guys kept pushing me to try 495 lbs., but I got stuck in the hole. I might have been able to achieve it had I skipped one of the other 1RM attempts, but there's always next time. At least I know that my goal of achieving a 500 lb. squat is both realistic and attainable. P.S. My buddy spotting me has a best squat of 650 lbs. and he reps 450 lbs. about 10 times. Strong guy!! |

I did shoulders on Thursday, back/bi on Friday after the massage. Then I doubled up this weekend on shoulders again by replacing 3 ceiling fans and finishing the wiring in the car port/sheds. When I got up this morning both arms were asleep and I could hardly turn off the alarm, couldn't feel the buttons. Plenty of back work because I remodeled everything in the backyard. Carrying 2 and 3 yard bags of dirt, moving the turkey box, basically I went all George Foreman this weekend!

Went for the 4-week review of my drug trial, and hit a new low on their scale: 190!!!! So I left the office and had a Blenders Raspberry to celebrate, yet my blood was still 122 at lunch.
Next target is the unseen 180 plateau. |

Dinner I was 125 (blood) and had 2 corn tortillas, some milk, and a bunch of leftover ribeye cut into small chunks, along with a couple quarters of avocado. Went to the gym and did legs and felt pretty good. Got home and blood was 285
Took a small 4 unit extra dose of insulin, and woke up this morning at 341 And I was going to be so proud of doing legs, now I start to wonder whether it's squats, or BCAAs that are messing up my sugars. |

Sure, there is a huge supply of glucose in the system to help restore muscles, but without putting a lot more insulin (and risking the much worse hypoglycemia) the sugar just floats around and doesn't do anybody any good.
I was feeling very tight when I woke up, and just expecting that was an after-affect from the leg work. The 341 totally surprised me. So I guess the moral of the story is that squats are like sex, the hormonal response will totally screw with my blood sugars. . . |
