987.2 if you want the most updated yet raw and connected driving experience. The chassis came out in the mid 2000s and the 987.2 (introduced in 2009) got a number of body and drivetrain improvements to make it far more reliable that the 987.1 cars. All models have great flat 6s with the base model 2.9 liter motors being the most reliable. The downside to these cars is age. You'll be spending lots of money to replace cooling system parts, cracked vacuum lines, shifter cables, clutch and flywheel, engine/trans mounts, suspension parts, etc.

981 if you want all the tech, more interior room, and a less engaging/connected driving experience. All models have direct injection and electric power steering. All models have great flat 6s.

718 if you want the most updated and present day Cayman/Boxster. The 718 is largely a 981 with exterior and drivetrain changes, the most notable being all engines are turbo 4s unless you spring for the far more desirable and pricier flat 6 variants which can be twice or more the price.

You are right, I'm afraid of age and maintenance. Best case scenario is to get the last M3 of this generation before it goes EV. Even 718 is gone now. Can't afford the Turbo S unless I win the lottery.

Thanks

Current M4? Head like a dropped meat pie. There's no shortage of good quality 987 caymans out there that won't need much work, but in OZ your prices are utterly absurd.

new is cheaper than a 718, has ICE, easier to go sideways.
