The 21" wheels fit perfectly, we put multi-season tires on them. The ride is soft, pot holes absorbed with ease. Nothing more to add.

Yes, ride stiffness is personal preference and very subjective to assess. I'm 40, no back problems and daily drive an X6M...someone else might probably feel different about it.

I’m getting closer to getting new wheels. It seems like I’m probably going to go with 19x8.5 +35 offset.

I am still having a hard time fully understanding tire sizes. It seems to me that I can possibly use my current tires that came stock on my x1 even though the rim size is .5” wider.

Is that correct?

Absolutely you can fit your current tires on a 1/2” wider rim

and according to Tire Rack testing, the wider wheels will make the car go faster...

Is there another tire size that would also be appropriate for an 8.5” wide wheel?

Wouldn’t increasing the width of the wheel reduce the diameter of the tire? If so I read that can effect the xdrive system and also obviously the speedometer

wider wheels are almost always heavier. The additional unsprung weight is not desirable. (unless the wider wheels are forged, which are lighter, of course)

Yea I’m sure they will be heavier. I don’t personally like the look of most forged wheels on the X1. But also I’m not sure I’m willing to pay what they cost.

Still curious about the stretching my tires to 19x8.5. Seems like it would change the diameter

Putting those tires on 10-11” wide wheels would be what I consider stretching them.

1/2” wider on the OEM tires and you should be fine. Most tires have a range of widths they are designed to fit. Going wider on all 4 wheels will not affect xDrive, it’s only when you go different tire diameters between front to back where you might have issues because the front and back wheels are rotating at a different rate relative to speed/distance covered.
Forged wheels for the same size are lighter for the same relative strength. You would benefit from reduced unsprung weight, which can positively affect steering response, handling, braking effectiveness, and fuel economy. Otherwise cast wheels are fine, you’ll likely not notice the difference from your OEM wheels with a decent aftermarket cast wheel, for the most part.

i have the 20s on the X1 with the 245. i was thinking to increase to a 265. i dont want bigger wheels but i want some more meat. i did this on my f30 with 19s and put on 265 rear and 245 front. worked amazing and handling was increased. plus it looked dope.

What changes when you put a wider tire on the same size rims?

same rims. the 20s seem to be enough on the x1. i just think it handles a little better. maybe a little more sidewall. its more asthetic for me.

Gotcha. I’ve been trying to learn all I can about rims and tires before I decide what to do about aftermarket wheels.

I mounted new wheels and tires on the wifes X1M35i last weekend. The plan is to run these for a few more weeks then mount winters on the factory 20's. Heres a few pictures . I think it turned out alright.

Would you mind sharing a link to the wheels and tires? Still trying to get a handle on the best width, offset and tire size.
