sheesh my buddy is a 1%'er and he has a 2005 330i ZHP. Those folks are satisfied knowing they could have anything, although they care about what they are leaving to charity and heirs when they pass away. imho that's why they hold back. |

We did, St Andrews was above our price range and Kent I thought was all girls. We also looked at a bunch of other schools like Montessori, Kindercare and Little Friends. We found that TLC Summit has a really caring staff and they introduced academic concepts at an early age. The environment was also really nice. It had a warm family type vibe. Plus it's full day, every day. Compared to our sons current pre-K he learned More at TLC. |

My old boss has an old 330ZHP, lol. He's cool though. He's definitely a 1%er, but spends $ on different shit. Just bought a $1.25M home in LA suburb and last year a $30k piano.
$30k piano??! Used??! |

I know... obvious troll was obvious. What an idiot though... he could have put a downpayment on a watch with $30K.... like a real fiscally smart man.

Actually if you buy them right watches can be decent investments or at least not lose much value. Not so easy for cars!

The thing that did surprise me is kids who don't want to work starting at 70k. It is above average but I could see it doesn't lead to Gallardos or anything like that... |

I always wanted the 007 Seamaster. I could swear the price for a gray market with #'s intact has doubled since 2006 when I first looked. In 10 years.

Buy more homes in near-hotspot neighborhoods catering to young professionals and also buy relatively cheap cars that will appreciate in value a long time from now. Next house- townhouse in the city of Dallas Next car- S2000 or Dodge Challenger RT/SRT Ok, the townhouse is realistic. Already have a rental income model set up and it's been great, so looking to expand on that. The collectible cars...that's down the road. My favorite example was my 1987 325is. Bought it in 2003 for $1000, fixed it up and sold it for $5500. Today the same car is worth $10k. |

For real. The thing is, they are expensive to park money in for long periods of time. I have the aforementioned 007 Seamaster (the one he wore, not the one with all the logos all over it). Yeah, after wearing it (and servicing it) for 17 years, it is worth more now than it was then. I have a few other pieces that will hold value WAY better than cars (especially ones comparably priced). But to MAKE money with watches, you have to have a shit pile of money to start, because many will break even and only a few "unicorns" (God, sorry) will make you any real money. It is an already-rich person's "investment" vehicle.

1.25 in LA is an average home, and 30K for a piano below average if you are talking about a steinway, good thing though they keep their value

Yup. Exactly why earning $400k/year (1% ers) on the coasts is pretty much "average".

In response to the $1.25M home being average in LA...which it is. It's a decently-sized home but definitely not MTV Cribs worthy. In fact, it looks like an average house. I realize the stats indicate much lower. Then my question becomes where and how do people live on 1/2 that income or less in NY, North Jersey, LA, SF, Chicago and Boston? Live in an apartment with 2 kids? Drive 1 car? Have no savings? Eat frugally? Before the torches and pitchforks come out...realize that in NY, to buy a 700 sq ft apartment in Manhattan is $1M. The mortgage on that home, assuming 20% down, is $3800. Add in maintenance, you're at $5000 easy. You're not leaving much to spend on anything else. But let's go through the exercise: Mortgage $3800 Condo maintenance fees: $1000 Utilities: $400 Garage rental (1 car): $500-$600+ Daycare (1 kid, assume 1 kid in school): $2000 Car payment (1 car, incl insurance): $750 ($500 lease/finance payment, $250/mo insurance) This doesn't include food, health insurance, savings, entertainment, vacations, etc. You're already at an annual gross of $225k. |
