You're basically championing BMW going out of business.

All the car companies are going to have to adapt. BMW isn't Ferrari. They're not even Porsche (who, incidentally, will also have autonomous cars). Is the 2021 M4 GTS going to offer Level 5 autonomous driving? I doubt it. But the core models? Absolutely. It would be asinine not to. It's a good thing the guys running BMW are less short sighted than the keyboard warriors complaining about them on blogs.
The fear is that this tech will have so much momentum that either it will be mandated or that the only offerings someday will be it - like manual transmission cars are becomjng more rare. You may love it, but understand that others may not, and theres no need to silence the minority

Judging by the pic, I think it's fair to say this can be retrofitted

Bad analogy with manual transmission cars. They are rare because most people don't like them and it doesn't make economic sense to cater to the minority. But as far as "the tech", companies are keeping their implementations close to their chests to maintain a competitive advantage. The Level 5 specification is *extremely narrow*, and as currently written, is *impractical* to serve as some kind of standard for autonomous ability. So if you were to mandate "the tech" you would need a much more rigorous new standard detailing capability compliance or force companies to divulge their AI R&D secrets to each other.

Your assumption is incorrect. The end-state of autonomous driving is the end of driver-driven vehicles. The end game (or dream state) of the technology is to compress more cars onto the same highway space at a higher given speed than what people (Government Bureaucrats and engineers) think is possible by humans. The idea is to take humans out of the system and let the system control the vehicles. There is not one person on E90 Post that has not in their lifetime experienced a software crash, hardware malfunction, or hack on some device they own. To think the autonomous transportation system is going to be immune to software crashes, hardware failures, or hacking is a ridiculous position; now throw in inclement weather and the system will be even more susceptible to failure. To think the Government is not going to have complete control over the system is also ridiculous. To think the Government is going to allow humans to drive vehicles within the framework of the autonomous transportation system is ridiculous. To think there will be any differentiation between autonomous vehicles is also ridiculous.

To think you are not going to give up your personal freedom, personal property rights, and right to privacy in trade for a safe autonomous driving service is completely ridiculous.

A manual transmission can be set to "comfort", "sport", and "track" modes simply by the technique and speed at which you shift it; it doesn't need "modes", modes are for manumatics that try to behave like a real 3-pedal manual transmission. If you can money-shift it, it's a manual transmission. "Yeah, but NO ONE puts an automatic trans shift knob on a manual transmission."

That day is still far away. Are you going to force low family incomes to sell their cars (2nd most expensive, if not most expensive investment for them) to buy something brand new?

Level 5 autonomy might be only a couple of years away, but full blown driving ban is much further.
