Defining too much is an individual thing. My definition of too much is radically different than my girlfriends. She thinks my stock f30 is stupid fast. But she hates my truck. That might have something to do with the first (and only) time she rode in it - I put on "Down with the Sickness" and put the hammer down. It is now "That Thing" to her. As in I ain't riding in That Thing.

I think it depends on the car, my R56 Mini was a blast at 220whp.
My 1er tries to kill me at WOT if I'm under 30-40mph, so Id vote 450-500hp is the most you really would want for a street car, more if you actually race the thing or are into top speed runs. |

How much horse power is enough?
It all depends on what you doing with the power. If it's for the street as a daily driven car I would say 450-500HP is good enough, unless its for the track that's a whole different topic.

I agree with the OP, on the street lower power is more fun. You can drive it like you stole it and not really draw too much attention to yourself. For the street I think handling is far more important for the fun of the drive than power and should be the unit of measure. Not having to slow down for a turn is better than having to lift because you have doubled the speed limit.

I agree or even a little less, like 10-12lbs/hp. I had a 1967 Lotus Elan that weighed 1500 lbs and had 115hp. That car was a blast to drive. Quick. And cornered like nothing else I’ve ever driven. I love my 2.5i. It’s really fun and honestly has all the get up I need for daily driving. BUT, I think about 250hp would be the sweet spot for this car.

Personally I wound say anything that is less than 15 pounds/HP you are good.
The reason I say that is that my forster XT weighs 3600 pounds with 250 HP. Now I realize BMW folks would consider it measly. But for even a person that does not like to poke around flooring my XT does put me make in my seat. Now at the age of 74 I don't street race.....But..... a while back I am at a stop light in the left hand lane bc a half mile ahead so this dude in a LOUD Pickup..Dodge V-8 pulls beside revs it up. I looked around and it wasn't even close...lol... After he was squashed out o his lane he back off and flies past me on the left ...But dude knew his ass was kicked. I had long gotten off of it. But interestingly I owned a '69 Camaro 4 speed 307 V-8. But oddly enough my XT would easily beat it. Obviously modern engines and drive trains are better. AWD doesn't hurt. And I remember, no matter how I drove that old thing it always bot 16.6 mph. It had a 4.11 rear end. It ran out of RPM at about 100 mph. And my XT..much heavier usually gets 26 mpg. |

Hp needs are relative to your needs right? Daily driver maybe just enough to enjoy back roads maybe a straight line acceleration enough to put a smile on your face. Race track as mucb as you can control and the car will handle for a season. Just my thoughts

Usually somewhere around 350 is more than enough for normal people so they don't risk themselves. For seasoned enthusiasts 500 or 700 may be fine. If you have no sense of self preservation and just want to thrill yourself a whole lotta times. 1000 HP is for you

just did stage 1 93 on my f80. ~490whp / 500tq
its about at the limit of what i'd be comfortable with on this tire setup ASSUMING its a warm dry day. 2nd gear struggles throughout, and on a smooth road 3rd gear at 4000 rpm will light them up a bit with DSC off if you're not careful. The car definitely has more power than brakes/tire/suspension. But thats fine for a 4 door autobahn car. My 458 is around 450whp / 320tq and feels very well balanced. Straightline acceleration is about the same as a stage 2 F80. hooks up no problem through most of 1st and hooks hard in 2nd. And it has enough brakes to handle the power/weight no problem.
